there were some decent songs from his early years there, but when Waters figured out how to write a song and wrap in themes, the band really went into the best direction. While I am no fan of Gilmour the person, his style was perfect for what they were doing. Who knows that they would have been had Syd remained, but it wouldn't have been what we got, which was about as good as the era produced and then some.
