Imigration, in Europe in particular has not been done responsibly and as such, those from other countries with criminal records or incompatible worldviews have been allowed to seek asslyum and then immediately start causing trouble in their new country.
This has tainted the water for immigration in the public's preception as those who have been rejected from entry have forced their way into the country through other means which paints an image of their country's government being incapable of responsibly handling immigration and protecting their own borders. Something that in turn puts more pressure on the government to close their borders or have better systems in place to prevent illegal immigration which now entails everyone, even working families from other countries that simply want to move for better prospects.
TL:DR, A minority of people from a particular region has ruined migration for the rest of us.

I think libertarianism and socialism is pretty based, but most people view it as an extreme ideology. Mastodon isn't really a place where a diverse array of world-views are tolerated, which was why I was surprised to find them around on there.
