They just subscribe event with filter kind: 1. Relay will publish any match nostr event to those subscriber (any clients) connected to relay websocket.

What is your nostr clients? If it is Amethyst you can set it with something like this

"Down arrow" icon meaning is to set relay as "Read" relay while "Up arrow" is to set as "Write". You can set both active or just one arrow icon.

You can freely use any other relay to write for example relay.damus.io nos.lol nostr.wine or other major relays. nfrelay.app will fetch/mirror automatically from other relays your notes/events and will store the event.

You can probably try using nfrelay.app . It has already spam filter implemented to handle RplyFamily and Impersonator. Let me know if you have still those spam while using the relay 👋
Additionally you can also add WoT relays to help such as:

This Reply spam seems little bit different than regular RplyFamily. It was targeted to more certain users (popular users).
I think we need more "Smart clients and Smart relays" here to solve the issue. Clients can show it clearly when the person have invalid NIP-05 (impersonators) while relays might probably filter them out.

1. It will be used by Amethyst to fetch event but will not be used to publish event into it. "Read" relay or Public inbox relay in amethyst relay settings. You can set it in "Public inbox relay" or you can set nfrelay.app in "General relay" setting like this:

2. nfrelay.app will fetch other posts/notes from other relay automatically in my server. It is ok if you dont set nfrelay.app as "write" relay. nfrelay.app is a read-only relay actually.

Amethyst latest version also do good job with Filtering profile metadata based on "hidden word" that were set. Other clients like Nostur implement WoT.

Unfortunately, there is no specific setting yet to filter language in major clients. At most clients will directly translate into 'best guess' target language like Amethyst and Damus (Purple member) done.
Currently nfrelay.app provides NIP-32 event for language labelling. Hopefully more labeller comes and client can pick up and choose data freely.

This release bring important change with NIP-32 compatibility (kind: 1985). Starting from this release, legacy custom event (kind: 9978) that were used for classification data in nostr-filter-relay has been deprecated. Other #nostr apps can freely uses NIP-32 label.
Legacy support is still available by setting nostr-filter-relay with environment variable as follows:
ENABLE_NIP_32_CLASSIFICATION_EVENT=false
ENABLE_LEGACY_CLASSIFICATION_EVENT=true
USE_NIP_32_EVENT_FORMAT=false

Yeah, you can probably get better performance with your home server especially if you have CUDA enabled. It can process image faster (around 20-40 ms)

Client and relay can implement some content filter feature.
For client, especially web clients, can use these libraries to implement the feature easily.

I think there are other libraries for iOS and Android that can be easily included in native clients.

Yes, It is probably package issue.
I haven't tried using its deb package but i can run normally portable AppImage version in Ubuntu 22.04 . Maybe you can also try AppImage version. Usually most distro support running AppImage directly (double click to run)
Otherwise:

I think you can support HTTP/2 request easily in by enabling it in Nginx (Assuming using Nginx)

It will solve connection issue without "hacky way".
I have no problem serving Damus users request in was://nfrelay.app because using Caddy that support HTTP/2 by default. Caddy intercept and reverse proxy the request properly in my case.
