WHY HELLO THERE!
We've just upgraded to Mastodon v4.7.1, more details here:
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.7.1
🙂

Hello everyone! We had a rough week last week, with two horrible accounts using our instance as a platform to spread hate, and an outage when we tried to upgrade to v4.5.0. Both of these really bothered us, so after a period of reflection, we've decided to make some changes.
We want to focus on making mas.to the best instance we can for our existing users (many of whose donations keep us running!) and their friends. And so we're moving to an invitation-only model until further notice.

We are, but we’ve also had a handful of accounts that are almost certainly scams. Our moderators are working with contacts who can vouch for validated individuals, but this is onerous and not foolproof. Regarding the account you mentioned earlier, this has already been validated with us and we’ve put a note on the account to confirm.

HEY FOLKS ❤️😎
To keep providing this service to you we need to keep the servers running, and to keep the servers running we need this thing called 'money', and to get the 'money' we need to ask you really nicely every month to give us some 'money'.
Many of you donate already, and whether that's by regular subscription or one-off payments we're hugely grateful! You are awesome ☺️
For anyone else who'd like to donate, you can do so easily via Ko-Fi at https://ko-fi.com/trumpet
Thank you!

Speaking from a Mastodon perspective, a 'clean' shutdown of an instance should involved the self-destruct process, although I appreciate that's not always possible. And yes, from a technical perspective posts are just text in a DB so I'm not too bothered about the resource implications, and old media from remote instances is pruned after a certain period. But I agree it's 'messy' where orphaned statuses/accounts are floating out there.

HELLO YOU!
Every month we reach out to our users with an important message about funding.
Donations from our users are our only source of funding. They cover our costs, but only just! We're hugely grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years.
If you'd like to help support mas.to you can do so easily via Ko-Fi at https://ko-fi.com/trumpet. They accept card and PayPal payments, and you can make regular or one-off donations.
Thank you! 🙂 ❤️

We’re sad to hear that https://botsin.space is going to be closing down in the near future.
If you host a bot there and would like to migrate it to mas.to, you’re welcome!
We do have one rule specific to bots:
“All automated (bot) accounts must enable the bot flag in their account preferences, respect #nobot markers, and post as unlisted unless making less than one post per hour.”
(The last bit is just to stop the public timeline getting flooded with bot posts.)
❤️
