That is a possibility. Also we could have a few metadata only relays, where you can locate which relays a user is posting to. Then users only need post to perhaps two or three relays for redundancy and the clients are smart enough to find the posts of the people you follow. It was cool to have the "global" for a while but that has come to a sticky end

Yes they connect to relays, hopefully not all the same relay though. Some of the clients basically use a hardcoded relay list, or set up new users with a default list which is effectively the same. The thing is, you can't expect to "see" every message in the world. It's not meant to work like that. If every message is on every relay we'll fall over rapidly

It's actually very light on webserver resources. Basically you load up the client once and that's it. You can handle vast amounts of traffic on such a client at very low cost

It's not clear what the requirements are. It's probably not too difficult to create a naive gitea instance with custom nostr messages but to do it right could be an enormous task. The devil is really in the detail here

Honestly even if there is some critical vulnerability that you need, it is always possible to make a version that includes that and does not include whatever nefarious other code they might want to package with it.
