If you'd like to try GrapheneOS on something cheaper before committing to it with a more expensive phone, this is a great option. It's what I did and happily used the phone for almost a year. It has a surprisingly good camera for the price.

In cooperation between @npub1ff3…cp4u and @npub1mwa…q4tl we'd like to demonstrate that even a large-scale conference can be live streamed without #YouTube. An initial stress test showed that 7 concurrent streams in multiple resolutions exceeded the capabilities of the server Vhsky.cz runs on (32core i9-13900 and 96 GB RAM).
However, the Fediverse community helps each other. @npub1ru3…wz8j loaned us a real beast machine which we now use as an external runner for transcoding jobs. It passed today's stress test with flying colors.

We have a smart water meter which reports water consumption several times a day. I thought I'd just integrate #HomeAssistant with the service API. However, there is no API, and the webpage with the values is buried behind at least four interactions. Yesterday, I started writing a fairly complex Selenium-based scraper. In the process, I discovered that I was being redirected to a page with values using an authentication token in the URL. I could just use the link and skip all the previous steps.
However, the page with the values is still generated by JavaScript, so I still have to use a web engine for scraping. It's too heavy for Home Assistant Green, so I have to run the service elsewhere and integrate it with HA.
All that just to read ONE goddamn value! What a beautiful rabbit hole for the weekend!

this one in particular was 53 euro cents. And except for superchargers which are 44c for non-Tesla cars it's the cheapest quick charge option here. The cheapest slow charging I've seen here was for 24c.
We have high electricity prices generally and they argue that they have to invest a lot into charging stations and they have a low utility rate now because the EV adoption is behind other EU countries here. So hopefully the prices will go down over time. I don't mind much because we do 90% of charging at home.

Yesterday, I stopped at a charging station in Mořice. It was probably the best charging experience I've had so far. There were 14 400 kW chargers, sheltered, with a picnic area, and a bistro nearby. I later learned that it had opened just four days ago, and that it is the first charging station in the Czech Republic that also supports electric trucks.
Well done, #EON. This is another sign that #electromobility is gaining momentum here.

OEMs are racing to see how quickly they can release security patches AFTER Google publishes the monthly #Android #security bulletin. Today, #GrapheneOS delivered me an update which gets my phone to the July security patch level, so BEFORE Google officially publishes it.
If only all the major OEMs were as quick as this community project.

I am becoming increasingly doubtful of #Telegram's background and direction. #WhatsApp is owned by #Meta and just announced that it will introduce ads. So, it looks like I'm left with #Signal and #Matrix. The former has better UX, but it's centralized and US-based. The latter is a bit clumsy but decentralized and EU-based. Neither is perfect, but they are the closest to it for me.

Many consider #Bluesky a success, but in fact its activity has steadily declined since Trump's inauguration. The #Fediverse has had similar trends. Rapid growth caused by an external event is always followed by a slow decline back to a small base of loyal users. In a world full of dopamine addiction, it's hard to be a social network without dark patterns.

For #EV charging, I already have accounts with #Audi Charge (#Elli), E.ON Drive, ČEZ FutureGo, PRECharge and Teplárny Brno.
I admit that this is a bit ridiculous. Ideally, your car manufacturer would provide a card that allows you to charge your car at any station at reasonable prices. Audi Charge allows you to charge almost everywhere, but definitely not for reasonable prices.

As I announced earlier today @npub17r3…rzjw and I are going on an #evtrip. Goal: pick up an Audi Q4 e-tron 35 I've purchased in Bavaria. We're staying in an B&B near the border over night. We use an EV on the way there, too. The only charging stop is in 311km. Once we get there, the car should have 19% of battery left.

A local ordinance has banned grass burning because it poisons the air and kills insects, and there are organic waste bins on every corner. Unfortunately, the effect is just the opposite. People who aren't selfish idiots didn't burn grass even before, and the rest burn even more now to show that they aren't obedient sheep and that no one is going to take away their freedom to poison the air for their neighbors.

My life with two phones was short-lived. It was not practical. I decided to go all in with #GrapheneOS and #Pixel 6a. I'll be giving the Samsung Galaxy S22 to someone else in the family and using the Pixel 6a for the next half of the year. If it's okay, I'll get a Pixel 10 and install GrapheneOS on it. If not, I'll humbly go back to Samsung and get the S25.
BTW it is interesting to find that I can live with a used phone for €120.

I see the point, however part of my job as a manager is being available to my team (during work hours) and it's just easier for me to reply on my phone "yes, do that" in a hallway than rushing to my computer. The beauty of the work profile in Android is that you can turn it off with one tap and I do turn it off after hours, at weekends and on holidays.

I found this slide from today's @npub1rk6…hv4q Hub 10 presentation interesting, and I can totally confirm it.
It always comes to mind when I see people marvelling at the progress of a new project, and viewing older projects as slow-moving.
At some point, all projects end up like this: the vast majority of the work is maintenance, and only a small fraction is new development.

One thing I don't like about #Signal is that it only supports one mobile device per account. I know they want to make it easy for the average user. But for someone who has two phones, it's very limiting.
That's why I prefer #Matrix. Adding another device and decrypting all existing messages doesn't even feel so clunky anymore.

Every time I'm in the US, I'm shocked at how much disposable tableware they use.
In the Brno office we use porcelain/glass cups, here it's all plastic/paper. Here they really focus on recycling and decomposable materials, but the most environmentally friendly waste is the one you don't create in the first place.
In the company cafeteria there is an educational board about how much waste is produced, that Americans throw away 2.5 million cups every hour. But the cafeteria still serves all food in disposable dishes. What's the point of the board? We know it's bad, but we serve you food in it anyway? 🤷

When I read the essay "The Power of the Powerless," one of the most interesting ideas I found there was the concept of the parallel polis introduced by dissident Vaclav Benda. It was basically a parallel structure of services to those controlled by the regime. One example was the so-called flat university. Professors who weren't allowed to teach in universities gave lectures in someone's apartment to students who weren't allowed to attend universities. This was difficult for the communist regime to target because it was not an institution but a fluid group of people.
In my opinion, the #Fediverse is very well positioned to be the parallel polis of our time if things really go south in the U.S. or elsewhere. ✌️

One of my resolutions for 2025 is to be more focused in work meetings, which for me means being more offline, because computers are inherently distracting.
So I got myself a good old-fashioned notebook and resurrected my #Parker fountain pen, which I hadn't used in years. In the process, I realized that I had completely forgotten how to write by hand and that my handwriting looks like that of a first grader.

I have to admit that @npub1nwk…dgjz is a nice surprise. It combines #Mastodon, #Bluesky, #Threads and #Nostr in such a way that they feel like one, but it's still clear what came from where. I basically only use Mastodon, so I'll probably stick with the Mastodon app, but if you use more of these platforms in parallel, it saves you from having to switch between multiple apps. 👍

#GNOME Papers finally becomes a PDF viewer that can digitally sign documents and verify signatures.
The latter was implemented by Marek Kašík from our team. It was several years in the making. He originally implemented it for Evince, but Evince is pretty much dead and it's been waiting to be merged upstream for 1.5 years. When Papers were forked from Evince, Marek rewrote it in #Rust and implemented it there. It's currently under review and should be merged soon. ✌️

I had a talk called "Unbreakable Linux for Entire Family" today. It had nothing to do with Oracle #Linux, it was about concepts and approaches around #Fedora #Silverblue to make a truly free ChromeOS-like system for friends and family.

My wife has been locked out of #Facebook. Out of the blue. No clue as to why. It's been two days and she hasn't found a way to get back into the account. It's not just Facebook. It's all her contacts on Messenger, all the third-party services she logs into using her Facebook account.
Don't have an online #identity that relies on a single social media/cloud provider. Email on your own domain should be your online identity.

Yesterday I was going through old photos from the village in Eastern Bohemia where my grandmother was born, and in the context of the recent record floods, I was intrigued by the ones where our ancestors in the 1950s were "solving" the water problem: they drained the meadows, straightened the riverbeds and filled in the natural meanders.
Today, we cannot be surprised that the landscape has little capacity to hold water which then immediately rushes down into the valley.

Sure, now when the plants are closed down, there is no sensible way to bring them back. But it's not like they would not be needed if Germany had decided differently 10+ years ago.
Germany has done an amazing job of moving to renewables, no doubt about it, but it is still not fast enough. The carbon density of the power grid is still ~350 gCO2 per kWh while comparable France is at ~50gCO2. Even if both countries get to zero at the same time, it's not like they've done the same job of climate protection. The cummulative emissions for all those years of the transition will be much lower for France.
But I agree that this discussion is not very productive, what is done is done.

I don't wanna be nitpicking, but these two claims contradict each other IMO. If the emission reduction is not as fast as we'd like, any non-emission power source IS needed.

I can second this. Our team never pushes an update to CentOS Stream before all testing is done. Once it's done it's pushed to CentOS Stream and an internal repo where it's waiting for the next release of RHEL. In 99% of cases we don't touch it again. So CentOS Stream is much closer to the final release than some testing beta. I'd say the only difference is timing.

Today I had an introduction to #Fedora #Linux for new students at the Brno University of Technology. After the talk, one student came up to me and asked if he could take a selfie with me, saying that he and his roommate are long-time Fedora users, and that his roommate wouldn't believe that he had met a real Fedora contributor in person.
Contributing to Fedora can make you a rock star, at least in computer science schools. 😃

I really like @npub19rt…adh9 for their values and principles. But they also technically rely on Google. But what browser doesn't these day? Yeah, the web is really ready for some restart.

The most affected is northern part of the country near the borders with Poland (cities of Opava, Ostrava...). While we got up to 200mm of rainfall, they got 400+. There has not been any significant damage in Brno (yet), the drivers are culminating right now. If nothing goes wrong, everything should be fine here by Thu including the connection between Brno and Vienna.

I know three Debian-based distros which are immutable: Endless OS, Vanilla OS, Nitrux. But they have a specific target audience.
An immutable OS also requires a change of habits. Since you cannot (normally) write to the OS itself, pretty much all work flows are container based.
What could be a good compromise is having a file system that can do snapshots and a tool that makes a snapshot before every package operation like apt-btrfs-snapshot. If something breaks, you simply reboot to the snapshot.

That's why I'm slowly switching my computers to immutable OSes. If something breaks during update/upgrade, I just rollback to the previous snapshot.

yep, interactions are what matters. The follower count gives you a false impression. The follower count is what makes people think their audience is on Twitter because they've accumulated a lot of followers over the years there, but their posts get almost no interactions and views that are <5 % of their follower count.

There is one Czech journalist who claims he has to be there for this reason. He has 200k followers, but if you check his recent tweets they get 2-4k views, ~1-2% of his follower base.
I think the slogan should now be: "That's where my users used to be".
