in college a crow took a dislike of me for some reason - I swear I never and would never intentionally harm a crow, and I never understood why - and would dive at the back of my head cawing very loudly if I cut through a certain parking lot where it hung out. It never like, actually attacked or even pooped at me that I can recall but it remains an extraordinarily unpleasant experience and I endorse going out of your way to stay on the good side of the local corvids

If you are sharing something you want other people to use or purchase, the landing page should explain what it is and does. This sounds obvious, but a catastrophic number of open source projects and even businesses fail to do this
I cannot count the number of times someone has dropped into a technical channel/forum/whatever with their thing and I have to ask them multiple times “okay but what does it *do*” even after reading all obvious material and I am usually surprised by the answer

I have been thinking along these lines. I spent most of my school years at a homeschool co-op (which my mother helped run for most of that time, even) and while it certainly wasn’t perfect it was a damn sight better for me (and I think a lot of my neurodivergent peers) than public school at the time would have been. As public schools get increasingly fucked I expect this to be a significant community need. I don’t know exactly what to do but… something.

You know how it feels when you walk through a spiderweb and you catch it right in the face? You get the immediate, visceral disgust reaction and try to GET IT OFF as quick as possible.
But like, nobody can really see it. You can’t see it well, so you kind of flail around trying to catch enough of it to get it off of you, and everyone just sees you flailing around is like “what’s up with them??” cause they can’t see it either.
And then even after you get off (which is such a relief!!) it still sometimes feels like there’s some caught in your hair (even if there isn’t) or something crawling on you (even if there isn’t), which makes you mess around even more trying to get rid of it.
Anyway, gender dysphoria is like having a spiderweb on your face your entire life and transition is flailing around trying to get it off.

Linux workstation report: the desktop experience is about a decade behind the modern experience, which means everything works more less out of the box with a googling here and there and is pretty pleasant to use after some quality time with the the settings dialog.
This is a considerable step up from the out of the box experience with a Mac, which demands you sign into things right away and wants money for fairly basic software, and especially windows, which is an outright assault.

thanks!! I was thinking LTO-6 if I can score one for a halfway decent price, I think that would work better for the data volumes I’m working with without spilling out to silly numbers of tapes.
Good to know about the speed/shoe-shine thing, I had not encountered that as a possibility yet. What kind of IO speeds are we talking here, if you have a good sense?

Are packet radio worms allowed by FCC rules?
Like as long as the transmitting station properly identifies and does not obfuscate the purpose of the message, and arguably publicly documents the message, I don’t see anything in Part 97 prohibiting it. Nothing really addresses the possibility of an unauthorized takeover of an automatically or remotely controlled station; arguably 97.219(c) and (d) indicate that responsibility for transmissions would remain with the control operator of the station regardless.
This question is entirely academic, to be clear; as cool as I think the idea is I definitely don’t have the time to write a worm right now lol

I think the point I’m trying to make is that I want the other way around too; that bluesky devs should understand why those of us who refuse to touch it don’t want to be there. But that would be against their interests, to be honest, so I don’t hold out much hope

I wanna be clear I’m zero percent disagreeing with your general point here. People go to bluesky because it’s legit better for their use case and mastodon devs need to pay attention to why that is.
Also being on a small instance run by and for trans folks is the best experience I’ve had with social media, period. We don’t federate with what seems to be a substantial portion of “fedi” and I’ve never missed it; I will not be joining bluesky because even with good blocking tools (which fedi badly needs, tbc) I feel much more secure here than in one big shared space where I need to block thousands of people (even if doing so is easy). That depends on the work of my awesome instance admin (thanks @npub1qdd…2qrs!) for sure and that’s not scalable, but like, there IS
a reason there’s a fair few trans folks on here.
