We don’t need people running around buying ads. While having booths at conferences is beneficial for a community-driven project, I'm skeptical about the value of billboards or sponsoring athletes as ways to promote Nostr. It’s fun, sure, but it mostly reaches people who are already aware of it.
What we really need is a focused initiative to grow Nostr—distinct from the fantastic teams already building Nostr itself. In a typical company, this would be the Growth Team. They’d focus on how people discover and learn about Nostr, the path they take to join, how they choose their app, what their experience is when signing up, whether they find engaging content, and how to ensure they stick around and invite others. This is not to dismiss the great work OpenSats and HRF are doing, but a growth team is something distinct.
Each app can handle some of this, and that's working to an extent. But Nostr is more than just a collection of apps using shared code. It’s a network that becomes more valuable with every new app built on Nostr. For example, when a user joins Primal, it enhances the experience for Amethyst users, but it also becomes much more interesting for someone using YakiHonne or Zap.streams.
So, we need people focused on cultivating the Nostr ecosystem. This isn’t marketing in the traditional sense, like buying ads, but more of a Nostr Community Growth Team. We need people who can work with creators and community founders to help them get started on Nostr. There’s a lot to grasp, and some hand-holding will be necessary.
We also need better internal Nostr news—something like @npub19md…6vzk but aimed at two different audiences. First, for users, fans, and developers on Nostr: how do you keep track of all the projects and what's happening? There’s so much going on that it’s hard to follow. The second is external: we’re doing tons of incredible stuff, and we should be building excitement about Nostr by showcasing these amazing projects and content to the wider world.
The team at @npub1w9w…k403 does cover Nostr, which is awesome, but their focus is on multiple social media protocols. Journalists write when they feel there's news to break, and we haven’t been doing a great job feeding stories to them. We can improve on this. One initiative coming out of Nostriga is better coordination on getting Nostr folks on podcasts, especially beyond the Bitcoin bubble where most people have heard of Nostr.
At Nostriga, I talked to a lot of people about how Nostr keeps being framed as an alt-right protocol in the media. That’s simply not true, but we need to work on changing that narrative. Nostr is for everybody, how Nostr is framed does matter. People don’t join a social app because of its functionality, they join because of the other people who are already on the app. Projects like Trustroots.io, Causes.com, and Protest.net will help showcase a different side of Nostr and build new communities beyond our Bitcoin-focused core.
Nostr has already grown in new languages and communities, thanks to creators sharing about it on centralized platforms. We saw this with the Thai community—it’s fantastic. Let’s develop a program to support these creators. We’ve been discussing with @npub13qr…almy how she wants a space to onboard her fans into a community together. There’s a lot of promise in Ditto, which I’m excited about—I’ve set up an instance at social.protest.net. What if we helped each of these creators build their own communities on Nostr? From that initial onboarding, their community would be able to connect across all Nostr apps.
This isn’t exactly traditional marketing—it’s more like cultivating and nurturing a healthy Nostr ecosystem.
If we make it easy for communities to create their own spaces on Nostr, we can grow organically in countless directions. Every new user will feel ownership and be inspired to bring more people along. To achieve that growth, we need to lay the groundwork. We’ve got the apps, but we need to work with the people. After all, we’re building social software, and both the technology and the people are equally important.

If we want Nostr to truly protect privacy and resist censorship—like when X faced a government ban—we need to stop relying on relays with known IPs or domain names.
We need encrypted traffic between clients and servers by default. That means Tor (and networks like I2P and Nym) should just work right out of the box, ideally without leaving the mixnet where traffic could be exposed at the exit node.
💡 A lot of relay operators are already running Tor onion services, which is awesome—but we need to make them easier to discover and use. If a public relay becomes unavailable, we should be able to switch to the Onion service version seamlessly.
What do we need to do to make this happen? First, it’s about getting Nostr relay software to publish the Onion address when it’s set up. Then, it’s about getting clients to handle alternative transports like Tor or I2P natively, letting users choose between IP (TCP/IP), Tor, or other options.
We could also explore mapping DNS records to onion addresses or including the info in HTTP headers. But maybe the most straightforward approach is extending NIP-11 to include alternate transport details so that everything's baked into the protocol.
What do you all think? How can we push this forward? Let’s brainstorm and figure out the best way to support these privacy-preserving networks and keep Nostr resilient. I think we need Tor support in native clients where users can turn it on with a single click. Or maybe even have it attempt Tor as a fallback when the normal way of connecting fails.

One way to help Nostr grow would to make it easier to find content in languages you speak. Damus and others have nifty ‘translate this note’ features but there’s something different from the way people speak in their own langauge.

We can easily add tags to events which would let clients request only events in a specific language, or set of languages. But do any clients write out the language tag and do any use it in the UI for helping people discover content in their own langauge?
I’m thinking of this because most Brazilians prefer to talk to people in their own language, Brazilian Portuguese (yes it’s different written language than Portuguese du Portugal).
It’d be so cool to have on boarding which saw that a user is in Brazil, or has their device set to pt-br and then show them primarily content in their own language. This is also true of Thai, Japanese, and Chinese which also have big sets of Nostr users. The latter two seem to use custom local Nostr clients to avoid this problem. I’m not sure what Thai users do. I know that although I speak Spanish, and there are lots of hispanohablantes on Nostr, we mostly seem to write in English. That’s because it’s hard to filter out by language community except for who you choose to put in your contact list.
So, what Nostr clients do this well? How do get clients writing these language tags in their posts and make it so clients then display / use them for users.

We need an instance of the nostr blogging software which highlights non-bitcoin content. I keep talking to people about how amazing and powerful Nostr is as an open Medium.com and showing them YakiHonne, highlighter, and habla. They get turned off not by the apps, design, idea of a protocol, or anything like that. They get turned off because all they see are bitcoin posts. They think, this isn’t for me.
It’s like porn on Twitter, there is so much of it, but you only find the porn if you’re looking for it. We need at least one nostr blogging app which can highlight other content with lots of diverse audiences. That way we can get them on board without them thinking, this place is not for me.

Yeah but in the context of my talk I was explaining how a very famous example of past deplatforming was Father Coughlin who was advocating the US join the Nazi’s side in WWII. He was justifying the holocaust. Then he was deplatformed and his weekly radio program listened to by 25% of Americas was take off radio stations because of a pressure campaign and advertising boycott. I was saying this is a case of deplatforming in the past that wasn’t a bad thing. Just like taking out the radio stations in Rwanda that pushed for genocide was good because it saved lives. My point is there are times in the past when people were deplatformed and it was the right decision.

To be fair putting nsec in apps which don’t store them securely is a terrible idea. It’s just we need to remember that an nsec isn’t as precious as a wallet key with money.
And that we were able to show the power of nostr and get folks excited when we showed them how to put their nsec in multiple apps they can use at the same time.

I am in favor of the historical deplatforming people who are actively promoting the holocaust while it is happening during WWII. You might want to give Hitler and his supporters a platform while they were running death camps. But I’m not. So are you working to do any of this? Or just telling us how to do it? I hear lots of security experts who love to tell me how to do things but most don’t either talk to actual users or build systems for other people to use. It’s like all the security experts getting pissed at Signal for using phone numbers but nobody built a version that really worked without phone numbers even though it’s open source and they kept saying it’s really important.
Or how security folks tell users to not reuse passwords but it was a couple decades before people admitted that was an insane impossibility and switched to passkeys that come with managed software.
We created oauth to solve this same basic problem. Keep users from putting user names and passwords in random apps. The effect of platforms switching to using oauth meant that all power got concentrated in centralized platforms.
I’m sick of security researchers who tell us how software should work. Think we’re doing it wrong, build a better solution.

Yeah there are real CSAM markets on telegram. But police aren’t actually interested in investigating them, we just report and takedown. Most CSAM markets on telegram seem to be cases where minors are producing and selling porn of themselves. They’re blocked from legit platforms so they use telegram. The thing is, who’s the victim? Is it good and ok that it’s happening, probably not but the solution would be both therapy for these kids, and a network of support.
We go crazy about shutting down CSAM but do almost nothing about the children being abused.

I’ve got a question for folks here. The definition of unconference I’ve used for a couple decades before getting involved in nostr is something similar to what we see the Wikipedia page.

When people arrive at the event they propose sessions and put them on post it notes and then there are many many rooms where discussions happen. There’s no schedule ahead of time, stage, presentations, or big screens. Sometimes there’s a mic and speaker that’s passed around if the groups get too large for every to hear.
It’s something similar but much better organized than what we did the second day at Nostriga in the DIY space.
To me there are things these open space style unconferences are good at, discussions, connections, networking, hashing out issues as a community, forming working groups on specific topics. They’re not great at informing where one person is trying to communicate a topic or project. A talk on a stage can do a better job of that.
I was expecting something more conversational where many people might have come to the event with topics of sessions they’d like to do, but there was no fixed schedule ahead of time.
I’ve heard many people say nostr* is an unconference. So clearly this word has the meaning of an event like nostr* events. But from the communities I’m coming from what we’ve been having in Nostr are conferences with talks, panels, and workshops. And a bit of open spaces discussions.
So my question is what is a conference if Nostriga was an unconference, what’s a conference? How is it different and what makes the one a conference and the other an unconference.
To me, I’d like us to have closer to 50/50 time and space between speakers on stages conference and group discussions unconference. I get a lot out of the talks and panels and enjoy doing them.
So. What’s a conference is Nostriga was an unconference?

It’s funny in Lisbon and Barcelona nobody assumed I spoke the language but in Scandinavia people almost always assume I do speak the language. I don’t speak any Scandinavian languages but I do speak fluent Spanish and B1 level Portuguese (not great but good enough to converse). And I’ve spent a substantial portion of my adult life living in Ibero-American countries.
The kind of crazy part is my ancestors came from Sweden, northern Germany, Wales, and England. I’ve only spent minimal time in this part of the world so it feels odd to be assumed I’m a local.

I appreciate the sentiment, and we need to both make a resilient network that lets users have good end to end encryption. But if we build a network that optimizes for that we’ll find the users don’t really take it up and they’ll revert to insecure and vulnerable networks like telegram.
Nostr has to feel fast and responsive to users who don’t need to understand how the network works. In some situations like replies / reactions / zaps the network works incredibly well. In others we’re not there yet.
The changes you’re considering were the things that @npub180c…h6w6 dropped from Secure Scuttlebutt when he redid it to make Nostr. SSB was painfully slow and really struggled with discovery. But it does work entirely p2p.

Yes they will comply with a court order if they lose appeals but they won’t know who their customers are.
There are configurations and Debian packages that keep your servers from logging ip addresses and other PII.
