My workshop gets basically *zero* Wi-Fi reception on my laptop. The highest speedtest result was 0.10Mbps
So, I dig out my $150 OpenWRT One router. Bigger antennas = better. Right?
I point it at the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi the shop has (5Ghz doesn't penetrate the literal multiple feet of concrete walls)
Aaaand I get 11 megabits down, 1Mbps up
So much jitter to the upstream router it hurts

Citing the UNIX design as an eternal guiding star feels a bit silly, but anyway
The reason systemd contains so many projects was those projects chose to merge under the systemd umbrella. Before that it was a free-wheeling mess with sysvinit/OpenRC/upstart/[insert other init manager] + the Kits + ntp-client/Chrony/whatever NTP and about a dozen other "parts"
You didn't so much put them together as pound the jigsaw pieces until they "fit" enough together to work (ish)

Something I've found building a 'retro internet service' is the absolute culture gap with younger people (early 20's)
They find the project interesting but then get anxious asking "okay but what can I contribute". Like they need to "hustle" or "prove their worth to be here"
I have to explain to them "do things that make you happy. Build things that bring you joy"

So because I'm *incredibly* smart I gave Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 a 10GB disk image
Turns out just running Windows Update was enough to cause it to consume the entire disk. And then hang Windows Update itself in doing so
Because I'm VERY LAZY (and the initial "Checking for Updates" takes literally TWO FUCKING HOURS) I enabled fucking Disk Compression in Windows
Amazingly it recovered 3GB of data immediately and is happily puttering along even through updates

I've spent the last literal fucking hour trying to reverse-engineer Cracklib's fucked up ebuild
2.7.X releases are all gone. The best I can find is 2.8.12 from Debian. So I copied the 2.7 ebuild over and started *fixing* it
At least now it fucking BUILDS. Though the linker seems to keel over dead looking for a directory that doesn't exist now

I love that I have to restart the "bootstrap.sh" every time a package fails to *download*

In preparation for a "closed beta" I overhauled my Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net landing page
At this point the network itself works solidly (though our available total bandwidth is about 300Mbps). Folks have attached their own retro computers and verified end-to-end transit works and even played games!

Apparently the final version of FileZilla to run on Windows XP is completely single-threaded
Which means if you feed it 25,000 tiny files, the UI will just hard-lock and refuse to redraw anything until it completes

Tripped over on a bug in systemd-resolved
The retro internet service I'm working on relies *heavily* on DNS poisoning (because that's the easiest way to re-wire old services to work without hacking up a users hosts file)
But (for now) we've still got access to the proper internet. So there's several layers of DNS servers involved
A specific host was returning both the (real) CNAME and our poisoned A record. Which was causing systemd-resolved to fail doing DNS lookups via ping. But NOT dig
