One hour ago, the DDoS protection on Masto.host was activated.
This occasionally happens for a few minutes and rarely has an impact. But today it looks like there is a significant DDoS attempt, and it's causing response times to be slow or to timeout.

There is currently an issue with the object storage that is causing servers to not be able to process media files and be overloaded (slow or, in extreme cases, stop responding).

Some instances have reported a problem where background jobs stopped processing (Sidekiq stuck).
A likely source has been found, and I will be applying a patch https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/35600
About 15 seconds of downtime is expected for all instances hosted on Masto.host.
Since the problem occurs randomly, properly testing the patch without deploying it to production is challenging. But in case it doesn't, it will provide more information for a better solution.

Well, in theory you could create a proxy on your end on top of Masto.host.
I host some servers that have a CloudFlare or Fastly proxy but you could achieve the same with Caddy or NGINX.

Hello,
I don't have anything in place to geo block any country.
In theory, you could block the IP ranges from UK in the Mastodon moderation, no need to have something on my end.
Notice that this would also block any federation from servers where IPs were in that range.

Mastodon v4.3.0 introduced a bug for anyone using OpenStack Swift that caused 'Media cache content retention' to fail if it attempted to delete a media file that did not exist (this is an edge case but it happens).
I have created a patch https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/32637 and will apply it now on Masto.host.
This will cause about 15 seconds of downtime.

I have a very advanced system where the ordering is done via an algorithm.
I will provide you a brief explanation on how that complex algorithm works:
- start on server one and then server two and then server three...
- inside each server, upgrade each instance by domain alphabetically

It looks like uploads are working again.
This will cause an extreme load in the infrastructures and servers with large queues will experience even higher slowdowns for a while. But this actually a good sign, the queues are being processed.
Will keep monitoring and I will update once I know more.

The issue has been reported to the admins of the Object Storage and waiting to hear back from them.
My suspicion is that when they fixed https://public-cloud.status-ovhcloud.com/incidents/zchrslswkkvp they reverted some default configuration and that is causing the upload failures.

I believe the source of the issue is with Object Storage uploads. So, instances with a lot of federation will be impacted with slowdowns, while instances with less federation will not be impacted by slowdowns.
I managed to get in contact with someone at OVH and I am waiting for a call back.

Yep, your server is only 19 months old, so having 730 days in your 'Content cache retention period' settings will have little to no impact.
Even 548 days will have little impact since that is pretty much the number of days the server has been live.
Finally, yes relays have exponentially inflated your database size. If you want to not have it growing at this rate, you should disable them.
