Not to be an alarmist, but my last two Bitcoin withdrawals from Robinhood to take my brokerage account to zero each failed first try after ~2 hours of waiting. Needed a second attempt in each instance to get the tx through. Maybe it’s nothing, but we all know in this space where there’s smoke it’s at least worth being guarded for the possibility of fire. Harkens back to the analogy of treating exchanges like public bathrooms - come in, do your business, and quickly make your way out.

Observations from trip to El Salvador this week…
Infrastructure: Drove newly built highways that are on par in quality to America’s, and access beautiful underdeveloped areas that will be legitimate tourist destinations within 10 years. Some of these projects are currently roads to nothing, but the “if you build it, they will come” spirit is definitely there.
Security: Never felt unsafe in two prior trips, but this trip the feeling of public safety was next level. I’d never seen someone out for a jog before in this country, maybe because most areas are an inferno, but also probably b/c security concerns. Runners out after dark all over San Miguel.
Commerce: New restaurants, shopping centers, and accommodations with modern form/function popping up everywhere. New homes also being built throughout the country.
Bitcoin: Nowhere to be found IRL. Zero presence whatsoever. Obvious why Bukele conceded forced currency acceptance in the IMF loan deal, really not giving away much there anyway. Still early. But also, what happened to Bitcoin City in La Union?

True this - I remember feeling like I was in my 50s in late ‘23 (I was 35). Lost 35 lbs in ‘24 and joint problems, inflammation, lethargy all magically disappeared. Did it all by exercise and changing what/how much I eat. Most people simply don’t have the drive/discipline to do this though.

Uber operates there and the first time we went (late ‘21), my wife wasn’t comfortable with renting a car so we used ride share pretty extensively. We Ubered our way around Playa El Tunco/Bitcoin Beach and also to get back to San Salvador. For data we have T-Mobile and used their $35 10-day unlimited data plan, which offers higher speeds and works well; their free international roaming doesn’t work so well.

If you own a home you live in, I think way more often than not you end up okay. We lived in our first house for 7 years and it only required a 3% down payment with a sub-4% mortgage + PMI. When we sold, we netted $100k+ including staging, repairs, and closing costs. Even with occasional renovation, maintenance, and repairs we were still +$90,000, which we definitely wouldn’t have been if we rented the same home. I know one person IRL who had financially devastating consequences from owning the home his family still lives in, and it wasn’t related to a natural disaster.

Those who’ve been in #Bitcoin long enough understand that we are all part of the greatest accumulation race in human history. At the same time, Bitcoin’s short history has shown that patience is often rewarded and if you simply played the game by always being on zero fiat, you would have ended up leaving a significant sum of sats on the table. This is why as a Bitcoiner with a strong desire to not try and time pico tops or get shaken out at the bottom, holding some fiat and scaling up and down my DCA according to Bitcoin’s relative expensiveness has made the most sense for me.
My preferred measure of Bitcoin’s relative expensiveness is what I refer to as Bitcoin’s Heat Index. It is a measure of Bitcoin’s weekly typical price (avg. of high, low, and closing) relative to its 200-week volume weighted average price (200W VWAP). In this measure, the 200W VWAP can be thought of as the long-term hodler’s average price, or a proxy for a potential price floor. A Heat Index of zero implies that Bitcoin’s weekly typical price has never been lower in its history relative its 200W VWAP, and conversely a heat index of 100 implies that Bitcoin’s typical price has never been higher in its history relative to its 200W VWAP. The simple strategy is for my DCA to scale lower as Heat Index goes up, and scale higher as Heat Index goes down.
Instead of using some sort of log regression, power law, or stock to flow model which I find to be dubious at best in terms of ability to understand near-term expensiveness of current price, this strategy also does not even attempt to project price into the future. It utilizes Bitcoin’s dampening volatility and historical price data to set lower and upper bounds for current price, and then measures what percent of the time the ratio of Price/200W VWAP is higher or lower than the current one, to determine Bitcoin’s relative expensiveness.
