I had a very early Emperor in the garden last week. The fieldguides say flight period is April-May, but I usually put the lure out in late March and catch an outlier, but I saw 2-3 in the garden on the 17th. I will put the lure out earlier next year, as they're presumably emerging earlier these days.

One from last summer #teamMoth to cheer myself up on these chilly mothless nights
Eyed Hawk-moths are among our biggest moths. When its forewings are covering its hindwings, the head with its dark markings might ward off a predator, because it looks like a furry face staring back, but if that doesn't work, then it flashes the ocelli (false eyes) on its hindwings and that often does the trick. #pareidolia

It'd be nice to get to 200 entries for my mothing glossary. It's currently at 183 with explanations and definitions of costa and kidney marks, SHCs and SSDs, palps and proboscis, Heath, Robinson, and Skinner, and lots more

In some of my photos shot at 1/16000s on a Canon R7, the wings of the Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth look like they're curling up as it flies. Anyone know if that is a common artefact of the way the sensor works on this and other mirrorless cameras?
I think the issue is due to "rolling shutter", but not sure...
