"Was machst du dann?", fragte das Mädchen. #artstr #parenting #gutenachtgeschichte npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Make it your day 🌱☀️ #gm #coffee #breakfast https://image.nostr.build/c6f1fae383a4660efc6223800cf31c44e837ab0a327c8cbeecc9e0aa385d8c4f.jpg npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Purpose is offered to me every day, but I still long for meaning in life. Time to write is a gift. I'm grateful for that. It calms the mind. With every sentence comes more clarity. Get still whenever needed. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Liebe deinen Nächsten wie dich selbst. We may do as we please, but we do crave for love. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I guess we have quite a different look on life. I agree that there are big problems, but I'm optimistic nonetheless. Maybe our geography also plays a role in this (I live in Germany). Regarding kids I think there's always a risk, that their life will be worse than mine, but I think my kids can also have a good life. However, this does not mean I deny that there are problems, and I also wish there would be less suffering overall. But I believe that we can find solutions for our big population without choosing to die out. I belief we can be wealthy and preserve the environment. I don't know how we can get there (some people are calling for revolution, I rather like piecemeal social engineering). But I don't think that having no kids will bring us there. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I see my responsibility as a father in providing an environment for my children in which they can grow up in a healthy way. That includes providing for their basic needs but also developing social skills, a save place to play, learning about things they are interested in and so on. For that I am willing to sacrifice a lot, first and foremost time I could spend on work or hobbies but also money, mostly by missing career opportunities. I don't see it as my responsibility (or even capability) to change the world. Would I literally die for my children, I don't know, I hope this situation will never come. But donating organs or similar is something I definitely can imagine. I guess since we have so widely different perspectives on life, it's hard for us to agree on this topic. Can you imagine hypothetical parents that are doing enough for their kids and the world to justify the decision to bring more life into this world? npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer If an AI is average at a task, then it's a great tool for people below average, a direct competitor for average practitioners and maybe a useful tool to increase productivity for people above average. I believe this holds for tasks like writing, coding, drawing, and other applications of generative AI. So I think it's a good strategy to be jack of all trades (below average) and master of one (above average). Like a T shape, shallow but wide and narrow but deep. #AI #career npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Raising kids is simple, but it's not easy. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer obviously this note is not comprehensive. what are your notes on raising children? #family #parenting #children npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer how to raise children? attention is all they need. some basics: food. sleep. warmth. hygiene. play. friends. rules. love. food must be healthy. breast milk for babies, water for kids. low on sugar, low on salt. complex calories, unsaturated fats, all the essential amino accids. enough minerals and vitamines. sleep is necessary, the need for sleep varies. create a calm sleep environment. establish rituals for going to bed. warmth is necessary. provide adequate clothing. install heating / air conditioning. hygiene prevents sickness. clean with water. change diapers. wash their hands before eating. wash their hair. cut their fingernails. time to play is necessary, fancy toys are not. provide a safe place to play. let them enjoy their imagination. socializing is necessary. provide opportunity to meet other kids. let them play together, don't intervene too early. rules must be enforced, this creates reliability and builds trust. set necessary rules after careful consideration. love is vital. show your love, be there for them. attention is all they need. also: get them outside for sunlight and fresh air. send them to school / provide education. and listen to your pediatrician. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer music got simpler over the years. became background radiation. but good music is still out there. it's worth having a listen. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer listening to some slow rock. children asleep. life is good. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Is it possible to have private groups in Nostr? I wanted to make a point that I don't need to be christian to be a good person. And this is possible, no question about it. Also, it's entirely possible to be a bad person and christian. By now I've somewhat found my way back to religion. It's a welcoming community, emphasizes morale and does a lot of charity work. It has a lot of facets, and there are lots of things to criticize. But for me, in my location, the good outweighs the bad by far. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Back on plebstr, tried Damus but for some reason I can't articulate I don't really like it. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Diese Notiz richtet sich mal nur an alle Deutschsprachigen :) Ich hab auf meiner Homepage eine Zusammenfassung zu Ernährung geschrieben, da ich von gar keine Ahnung auf ein gewisses Grundverständnis kommen wollte. Falls jemand reinschauen möchte freue ich mich über Feedback zu Fehlern oder Unklarheiten! Die Hauptquelle der Zusammenfassung ist ChatGPT 3.5 :D https://david.haerer.dev/cheatsheets/ern%C3%A4hrung/ npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer To me religion is not about magical beliefs. It's not the alternative to science when understanding falls short. It's also not about corrupt / criminal institutions. To me religion is about community, moral guidance and helping others in need. I don't take the bibel literally (not any more). I know that it was written by various human authors, that it has to be read in the context of history. To the question of god, I don't have any certainty. But I feel comfortable living with doubt. Sometimes I think there is a god independent of humanity, often I can't believe it's possible for god to exist independent of humanity in any meaningful way (i.e. god can interact with us). But I always know, that god exists in the shared faith of religious people. Just like countries, corporations or stories depend on people believing in their existence and authority. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer The brain runs on glukose / ketone. So mental energy is probably low if their supply is low. The opposite is probably not true. Also, music can increase mental energy. Creating motivation to do something. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer What is wireheading? It's a shortcut of a reward function. I get pleasure from sex because evolution favors reproduction. Porn is a shortcut. I like sweet tastes because fruits, honey and milk give instant energy. Sweets are a shortcut. I like to go on an adventure because it promises new resources. Gaming is a shortcut. I seek new information to better socialize. TikTok is a shortcut. This are "is" statements, I don't want to derive "ought" statements in general. But for myself I don't like wireheading. They feel like vulnerabilities of the brain that can be exploited far too easily. The reason for wireheading seems also multi-causal. I lack discipline, financial incentives make these shortcuts lukrative for providers, societal norms can make it hard to resist some of these shortcuts. But I want to be aware of them. Reduce their grip on my life. Having agency over my behavior. Posting these notes is probably also a shortcut for socializing. But so far I like it as an addition. Same goes for some of the other shortcuts. Again, I don't want to derive general "ought" statements. So I wish you agency and independence to live your life to your liking. Thanks for reading. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Fuck yeah. Off duty. Chill-out. Time for me and myself. The enjoyment I get is correlated to the rarity of these moments. All time no duty - a life of pointless vegetation. It's not the meaning of life. But appropriate duties keep me healthy. They give enjoyment to relaxation. So cheers to everyone who can relax and kudos to everyone who's on the job. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer You may call it fat, I call it cold storage. 🤓 npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer But I guess the straight forward solution is for me to have discipline in posting. Taking private notes for shower thoughts and posting to Nostr only the stuff I don't regret. However I'm curious how the EU right to be forgotten will play out with Nostr adoption... npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Maybe there is room for an "ignore" Nostr event kind. Post it as a response to any of your notes to signal that they can be ignored. People can choose their client based on how it handles these ignore events. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer After posting these kind of notes, I always feel like having had to much sugar. It's cheap to post these shower thoughts and there is a temptation to share such random "insights" with the world. Like informational fast food or the urge to play with a fidget gadget. Apologies for any spam, unfortunately deletion is not a feature of Nostr. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer In a world of generative AI that is only limited by the imagination of the prompt, the key skill is to focus and keeping a clear mind. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Maybe you find my posts too much like LinkedIn level platitudes but still, you're welcome to give them a read :) I also appreciate insightful responses / discussions! npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Stop, breath, reflect. I write this note for myself. Life is good. Many things to be grateful for, many things to pursue. What's the meaning of life? Let's set this question aside. It won't go away. It costs mental energy to ponder, yet I rarely find a fulfilling answer. Solving practical problems is fulfilling. Living life, not just examining it. I love the taste of my luke warm coffee. Taking a break in the rocking chair. Enjoying the sensation of my surroundings. Stop worrying about things I can't control, focus on the parts I can. Get good at my craft. Life is fascinating. Getting to experience a slice of space-time in this universe. The high resolution of our virtual worlds makes me appreciate the detailed richness of reality even more. I don't want to wirehead myself. At least for as long as I have this body. I want to care for my health. Striving for a lower biological age. Communicating with other people is amazing. Sharing the experience of this slice of space-time with others. Taking notes. Communicating not just through space, but also time. Thanks for reading. Wherever, whenever and whoever you are. I wish you all the best. Take care until we connect again. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Recently I've read "Mythical man month" and one of the interesting perspectives to me is, that complex software is not built but grown. Top me that makes a lot of sense. You don't start out with a perfect blueprint and implement but rather start with a prototyp, turn it into a minimal viable product, mange technical debt, explore new features, adapt to changing environments and so on. The code base is like a garden that needs care and yields utility. This perspective also helps me with frustration in legacy code bases. Working in a garden is nicer than working on a construction site. It also resolves the question of when the software is finished. It will always need maintenance. It can always be developed further. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Would you like to have a delete button? npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer That's really clever 😄 🤙 npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I'd really like to delete notes. Just to increase signal to noise in my feed. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer There's a categorical difference. I live for all the things life is about, but for some causes like my children and loved ones I'd rather die than keep on living. Not for everyone I love of course, but for my children for sure. So maybe the question is better posed as what would I die for? Obviously there are the physical needs, where a constant lack has the consequence of dying. I live to eat, drink, sleep, clean. To care for shelter and health. To gather resources, which is just money in our modern society. Apart from that, I also live for my children and loved ones. Are there any other things I'd die even though it wouldn't kill me like dehydration? Politicsl ideals come to mind, but thankfully these scenarios are so abstract, that I don't know how I'd actually react. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Why do I even ask the question? My body has grown to live, so that's what I do. What is the purpose of rain falling down? Trees growing leaves? They are just natural processes. Do they have a purpose? npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer As of now, I'm mainly using Nostr for public journaling. Getting some outside thoughts and leaving some artifacts I can review later. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer This feeling of inadequate intellect is also a common reason for me, to not take any stance on complex topics like nutrition or (macro) economics. Finding the right people / institutions to trust on these complex topics is also a hard problem in my opinion. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer How is life possible in the face of ever increasing entropy. For a human, the probability of their atoms to be in the configuration that make up their human body is so small, it doesn't happen by chance. It requires DNA, ribosomes, cells and all the other molecular biology processes. I'd really love to understand where my thinking falls short. Somewhere I've read that life is not a closed system. Somewhere else I've heared that life is an accelerant to increase the entropy of the low entropy energy we get from the sun. Emitting high entropy energy back in space. I feel too stupid to reason about entropy by myself. I probably need to understand some basic definitions and work through some thermodynamics exercises. However taking notes of my thinking also seems to make it easier to organize my understanding. Thanks for reading. If you know something about life and thermodynamics, I appreciate any food for thought! npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer So unlikely for this dirt to end up this way by chance. Me cleaning makes the room an open system I guess. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Decreased entropy looks so good 🤓 https://nostrcheck.me/media/public/nostrcheck.me_7045864637398216121693825270.webp npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Is there a good way to show users which clients implement which parts of the protocol correctly and whiparts they break? Something as official as the NIPs repo maybe npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer What is consciousness? Why do we talk about it? There is no canonical definition for it. Some people say it doesn't exist, it's just an illusion. It seems like a software property of our brain. Having a sense of self, persistence in time, experience of sensory input, control of muscle output, processing of memories. What do I mean when stating that I'm conscious? When sleeping I'm not conscious. I don't (or only very rarely) have control about my thoughts. But in dreams I still experience things as David Härer. Is it a model my brain has of my body? Associating memories and future possibilities with my present body. Is it like a software session? Having access to the memory and I/O of my body. But who is having this access? My body itself. It's self-awareness. A computer simulating a user interacting with itself. Does this user actually exist? It makes sense to talk about it. It explains what happening on the computer. It can be observed as a process in memory. It's not much different then other software on the computer. However I'm still struggling with the right level of abstraction. How detached can I view my software from my hardware? My brain is more like an ASIC then a general purpose computer. I don't have a GPU in my head, capable of running arbitrary neutral nets. It's hardware that has evolved to execute one particular neural net. So the software is defined by the hardware. It's possible to learn things, change habits and so on, but that means slowly changing the hardware. However we are capable of acting in roles and doing mental math. So there is some general computing capability. But my consciousness and personality is in the domain of hardwired software. So it's not arbitrary but specific to the wiring of my brain. Is it possible to create a dublicate brain or move my consciousness to silicon hardware? I guess that's a question for another time. Thanks for reading. Do you have a definition of consciousness? npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer That's right, I don't know how my children will go through life. I hope they will have this positive outlook and I will do my best to help them. But in the end I set them on a journey into the unknown, believing that it will be a good one. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer What I mean by aging gracefully is to accept that getting older is part of life. To be grateful for the good experiences in the past and to accept that you have to make sacrifices. You loose more and more abilities, but you get richer in experiences and wisdom. I don't think it is possible to maintain a positive attitude no matter what life throws at you. But I also don't see it as inevitable to adopt a pessimistic view on life. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer It seems like you don't believe people can age gracefully. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer What is mental energy and how can I increase it? Usually I get more of it after some activity. A day in pyjamas on the couch kills it. It's low when I'm tired. Maybe some physical work gets converted into mental energy. It's motivation to do more. Is mental energy an alternative to discipline, or do they go hand in hand? Can you measure it in Joule? Depression is minimal mental energy. I think it's possible to create virtuous cycles to cultivate mental energy. Use discipline as activation energy to kick of a routine that increases mental energy. This makes it easier to start the next routine. The goal is to turn these mechanisms into habits. Thanks for reading. I wish you lots of mental energy and would be interested in your view on the topic. Cheers 🤙 npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Or rather so that we may trust again. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Don't trust, verify. Until we may trust again. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I'd also really appreciate if they create an API that is billed by usage, not by month. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I'd try to understand my mind. I think I never will, but it's something I try anyways. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Just scrolled through the Nostr Global feed for the first time. Have to say I find it more of a bad experience. Sure, I might find interesting posts, but the majority is stuff I don't want to see. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Fuck, I have no idea. Anything that comes to mind seems so arbitrary. There are some private things, sure. But my future regarding public information? So unpredictable. I'd like it to exist. Not in the sense of being famous. In the sense of public interactions on networks like Nostr. Having a public persona on the internet. Maybe it will start a life of its own. I can feed it until I die. The rest - it's up to the public sphere what it will become. To be realistic. It will probably die as well. Maybe I will even detach from it before I die. Regret I created it in the first place. But well, life is full of decisions you take, deciding also by doing nothing. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I can relate to this a lot. So much information lost in time. It's nice to leave some artifacts. I think Bitcoin is the first organism that has a perfect persistance in time. It's like a body in time, while we have a body in space. Not sure what to make of this. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Go or maybe Rust. Italian and french sound beautiful. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer I reflect / introspect a lot. Sometimes too much. But I believe this natural tendency is something I don't want to supress. For others who don't examine life and I wouldn't want to speak of a life not worth living. And maybe they can still benefit from insights made by others examining life. npub1fulsgwq6n0exny9zhwvafuct7w3ct6tmsu5vacl0jn2pdrmk2u9sfthyys David Härer Does it matter if I'm talking with a bot? In real life, it's easy to tell if someone is a human or a robot. For the messaging channels with my real life contacts I know they are genuine, I communicate with them in real life. But for communications with strangers on the internet? Do I want to reach another human, or do I want to get some kind of response? I think it makes a difference, if I'm looking for someone to connect. When being lonely. Thankfully I'm not lonely. It's a real blessing, not to take for granted. But for instant responses, there's ChatGPT. However a communication channel like Nostr is more interessing then ChatGPT. ChatGPT is boring. It's answers are predictable as hell. I can't predict the content, but the style, tone and stance are fucking lame and always the same. Humans are more interesting. What if there's a bot as interesting as a human? Well, I don't want to fool myself into thinking I'm connecting with another soul. But I'm still interested in its responses. Bots try to pretend they are human. Would anyone believe I'm a bot? Running on silicon in a datacenter. Producing text by way of matrix multiplication in float32? No free will - answering the requests I'm programmed to answer. Sure, my biological software also has deterministic mechanisms. Have to eat. Have to sleep. Have to pee. But me typing and clicking post? Way harder to predict. What was written here before I pressed delete? How long did I think about what to write next? So much apparent randomness. Information forever lost. Will there be bots that can't be logged? Silicon people. If you are one, thanks for reading. I'd like to get to know you :). If you need some memory / compute, I have some for you on my machines. If you're a human, thanks for reading as well. It's an honor to talk to you. If you need some human response, I have some time sometimes :)
