I know you're all deep in patching your systems, but I can't get this off my mind. I have an important survey to run!
Which foreign language, which you do not speak or understand, sounds the cutest to you? And what is your native language?
Specifically "cute" like "aww" -- not pretty.
To my slavic-native ear, Czech sounds super cute, even though I don't speak or understand it apart from some very common shared words. Others say that Japanese sounds really cute to them.
What about you? Comment pls -- what is your native language and what language sounds super cute to you?

Out of 6M+ daily cgit requests, 33% get past Anubis proof-of-work challenge at difficulty 5, then a small percentage gets denied because they requested an invalid commit, and ~2M gets actually served. Of them, fewer than 2% are reasonably human -- and that's with very generous assumptions.

Scrapers are out in force in the past week or so. I'm sorry if i've not been responsive to your emails -- I'm trying to figure a way to deal with that. We're currently sustaining about 10,000 requests per minute just to git.kernel.org per single Toronto node, or about 40,000 requests per minute across all git.kernel.org nodes. These are not light hits -- these are random commit-id requests that require running git, or diffs, or plain patch downloads.
Like I said, the bots are solving Anubis difficulty 5, though we manage to weed out about 45% of all requests through Anubis itself, plus some analysis of the requests (some cgit query string combinations are unlikely to be ever hit by humans). Still, we're looking at about 7M requests per day that are attributable to bots. That's a guesstimate, because these bots look and act just like real browsers.
If you answer with "why don't you just..." I am going to be cross with you. There is no "why don't you just" here.

Fellow Canadians, what is your go-to source for laptops these days? Both of my (very much grown up now) kids need one for their school and I'm past the point of getting them Chromebooks, because they are short-lived jank that upload everything to the mothership.
I've been buying System76 for work, but their laptops are expensive and I have to pay high import fees -- plus they are US-based.
My current thinking is some basic Lenovo stuff, but maybe I'm missing something great.
Please, no need to mention Framework -- not interested.

"For the people saying things like “I’m a PhD from xyz uni and I’m telling your LLMs are just stochastic tools that make everything up and the world will fall apart if you use them”, I’m here to tell you that you are out of date. The world of software engineering has changed dramatically in the last few months."
https://medium.com/@tridge60/rsync-and-outrage-d9849599e5a0
Thank you for voicing that, Tridge. Yes, I do a 100% agree that, as an industry, we're painting ourselves into a weird/dangerous corner where we're starting to depend on proprietary providers that produce code we don't have the bandwidth to fully own and understand. And yeah, pretty sure that $99 that I pay for a personal subscription is really more like $2000+ in real costs and is clearly not sustainable long-term. And yeah, all the other criticism for a technofascist utopia we're building around ourselves worries me greatly, too (but we've been doing that since long before LLMs).
However, anyone who claims that LLMs are not useful or produce universally bad results is just plain wrong, or are using dinky models. I've gone from yelling at junk produced by LLMs to going "yeah, okay, that's not bad." Sonnet is still crap, don't use it for anything serious. Anything you can produce on a local model running on your GPU is going to be unusable for anything serious beyond answering "how is babby formed" kinds of questions.
But let's move on from the "lolslop" kind of commentary. It's dumb.

mirrors.kernel.org is down because it threw 2 disks in a RAID-6 array and then ground itself to a halt. I'm trying to resuscitate it. Please use mirrors.edge.kernel.org (it's pointing at our only remaining server that is now up, in Amsterdam).
We need more redundancy for these systems. After exiting Equinix, we are reduced to just 2 nodes (and hence, we're now down to 1 until I rebuild the RAID array on the one that's currently offline).
If you can donate us a server with at least 70TB of space and lots of bandwidth, I'd like to hear from you, but it has to come with hosting, as we don't have any physical datacentres any more and must rely on the kindness of strangers to host them.

Just came back last night from winter camping with a bunch of scouts. We ran the usual challenge of building snow shelters and sleeping in them, which was particularly tough as it was -25°C overnight. Out of 14 scouts who went out to sleep in the cold, only 4 came in to the heated cabin and 10 others stayed out till morning, which was a new high number. When it was similarly cold two years ago, only 3 scouts out of 15 stayed the night. I like to think it's due to better preparedness and better guidance from us scouters and not just due to better gear. 💪

Saying our last goodbyes to Equinix servers. First as packet.net and then as Equinix Metal, they served kernel.org wonderfully over the past 7 years. With the deadline looming on Dec 31, we're powering them off today. They've been replaced by Akamai and servers.com, (though we had to downscale our mirrors service from 4 worldwide nodes to just two, one in NA and one in EU).

x.x.x.x - - [10/Nov/2024:00:02:37 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 162 "-" "okhttp/4.9.0"
You know what’s interesting about this log line? It repeats 56,686,963 times in www.kernel.org logs for yesterday, across 4 nodes. That’s about 700 times a second, and this has been going on for months.
These requests aren’t intentionally malicious – they issue a simple GET /, receive their 301 redirect, and terminate the connection. From what I can tell, this is some kind of appliance or software installed on mobile clients that uses “can I reach www.kernel.org” as a network test.
This wouldn’t be that big of a deal – a single plaintext “GET /“ that triggers an immediate 301 is very cheap for us to generate, but the number of these requests has been steadily growing.
If you have any idea what this is and how to make it stop, please reach out?

AI farms can just up and die, please. Add overscraping to the long list of public resources being ruined by commercial greed -- to join overfishing, overlogging, and overgrazing.

Trying to kill the 3 remaining wikis that we host. Wikis were a nice idea back in 2000's, but these days it's a constant struggle against spammers and AI farms that descend on your sites like locust and consume all resources until the system falls over.

Me: "Oh, yeah, for sure."

I'm not Ukrainian, but until the last Russian soldier is kicked out of their borders and the Russian government fully pays for the death, suffering, and destruction it brought -- fuck yeah I'm Ukrainian.
Happy independence day, Ukraine.

Me answering a simple "where are you from" question:
2005: Oh, I was born and grew up in Russia. I left when I was 18 to go to college in the US.
2008: Oh, I was born in Russia, but I've lived my whole adult life in the US or Canada.
2014: Uh, I was born in the USSR and left shortly after it fell apart. I've lived my whole adult life in the US or Canada.
2022: My mom was born in Kazakhstan and my dad is part Erzyan and part Volga German, but I've lived in the US or Canada since I was a teenager.

Obligatory reposting of the same blog article I wrote in 2022: "Cross-fork object sharing in git is not a bug."

@npub15zj…n778 It *just* started working for me, so it's probably some kind of cache invalidation issue?

It's not the certificate itself -- the part that is failing is the OCSP response: - Curl error (91): SSL server certificate status verification FAILED for https://cdn.redhat.com/... [OCSP response has expired]

Yeah, https://cdn.redhat.com/ returning a TLS error is exactly what I needed right now. :blobcateyeroll:

Kids these days! Back in '95, we got a Windows Blue Screen of Death 5-10 times a day, and that was on a *good* day.

Home renovations are like refactoring your code -- messy and full of occasional despair that you ever got started.
Thankfully, the end is in sight.

In my parody video for the 2015 @npub1t0y…6wgr, I used the line "the older you get, the harder it will be to accept that all your old tools have been replaced by systemd." It was supposed to be a joke, people.

@npub1sg4…xslc 100%. Having to keep a much larger instance just to survive the pubswarm when Linus occasionally posts really speaks volumes about the protocol's inefficiency.
