Ubuntu 27.04 codename is TBA, but what would you choose if you could?
We know it'll be T.T. (or not T.T., that is the question—who's writing this stuff?),
'Trusty Tahr' was used in 2014, so we know it won't be that.
Feel free to file your predictions. No prizes if you get it right, other than the self-satisfaction.

Calibre has been updated, adding a 'create your own adventure' game, powered by AI.
You design a world, create a character and shape the story by your choice to what the AI says (and the images it can, optionally, generate).

Ha, it's a shame there aren't many choices of apps, but also great that we are spoiled with the ones we do have. I haven't checked in on Tokodon for a while, but I shall make a note to! (I didn't know Tuba had a forerunner, interesting!).

A good error dialog should tell you what failed, why it failed and what to do next.
Ubuntu's App Center offers none of those things with a "shoulder shrug" error message saying it's "not sure what the error is'.
With new features like driver management being integrated in 26.10, isn't it did it did know?

And the classic: "Did you even check the Discord?".
I found, early on, that asking a question by making a WRONG statement would get the right answer, faster.
A very, very simplistic illustrative example:
If I asked: "MB in Linux stands for MilliBloops, right?", I would get "No, it stands for megabytes" as an answer.
If I asked "what does MB stand for?", I'd get variations on "lmgtfy".

It's frustrating, and not because I lub weddit personally (I don't use it often) or want traffic/cloud, because the 'reason' for the ban is inconsistent.
Putting aside the literal 'blogspam' that gets posted that no mod bats an eyelid over, the fact is scraper sites can share my posts *verbatim*, still containing my watermarked graphics, and no-one is saying "oh, this is garbage" - instead everyone discusses the news/content.
It is, as you said, a "make it make sense" situation

For me, it's not that Mozilla should ignore AI, it's that of all the companies that exist… Mozilla ought be the one that figures out a way to use it as a tool to empower people as people, not as consumers.
In this piece, its talks of empowerment as the 'choice' of which big AI chatbot to use inside of Firefox, effectively.
Which is why its talk of being the "rebel alliance" against big AI is cringe since in the same breath its staking its financial future on being paid by big AI.

Setting revenue targets for "public interest" projects means they're not really serving the public's interest so much as your own bottom line, i.e., features to monetise, no?
"AI is filling the internet with slop... creating huge social and economic risks" they say in the SAME piece where they announce they're building slop pipes in their products, and investing in features to asset strip the internet.
To "protect humanity" from big AI it, er, will add features to generate revenue from them.

Mozilla has detailed it's pivot to AI, lazily framing its "people-first AI" vs "big tech AI" gambit as a rehash of 2000s browser wars.
Over the next three years all of Mozilla’s portfolio "will design their strategies" and "measure their success" with how much AI they're adding.
AI features in Firefox will be "opt-in", but no doubt it'll nag you to try them since Mozilla is making 20% yearly increases in non-search revenue part of its "bottom line" mission.

Soooo… This take on our logo was semi-designed as a joke initially. We'd had a decade using a horizontal typeface logo, and I wanted to move back to something closer to our "iconic" speech bubble logo. I got stuck making it work for 2024 and goofed around sharing some "if omg was…" riffs on famous logos (MTV, adult tube, etc).
When I did Popcrave… people said "that works", so I iterated on it. Always used a lurid satsuma colour scheme tho 🍊

For real? I hadn't heard about that. That's awful. I cheekily refer to the 'new' leadership at Mozilla as pod people as they only pay lip service to community, open web, privacy - their actions are the opposite. If there was a biscuit left on the plate to take, Mozilla would (British idiom).

Out of interest, why do you feel so strongly that Imgur *should* be allowed to collect and sell personal data on users under 18 to third-parties?
Imgur was asked to stop under a GDPR-adjacent law but said no, so the UK regulator reminded them they could be fined if they continue.
So Imgur said "Bye-bye UK".
Facebook/Meta, Google, TikTok, etc don't do it. Why do *want* them to follow suit?

It's there to make Mastodon refresh the 'card' preview.
(Long, boring story: I often publish articles and then tweak a few things before I share it on socials. If someone has already shared the link before I have, the preview card title and image is cached version. Adding '?v1' to the URL makes Mastodon see it as a new link, even though it isn't, and it'll re-cache the live version).

Launchpad could do with a wider range of labelling, as it can be confusing to see things like "fix released" when… nothing has.
Once a fix *has* been released, the bug gets 'closed'. An automated comment will show at the very bottom with the first line saying something like "fixed in [package name].[version]".

The main issue is with AppArmor, which that bug still lists as 'confirmed' and 'critical' - it'll move from 'confirmed' to 'fix released' once resolved. The flatpak package (the bottom one) is also 'confirmed' as affected, and will be updated. The two which are 'fix released' aren't strictly relevant - the first is the main page for flatpak on launchpad, not the package itself, and the second was tagged so the bug was mentioned in the release notes (which it was, so 'fix released').

Thanks Paul. Thankfully messages like this are rare – and I have gotten one from the opposite viewpoint: that I'm anti-GNOME or disrespecting Ubuntu because I cover Xfce or Sway or Linux Mint too often 😂.

On a broader point, this message hints at the creep of the 'hostile media effect' - that if you read something that doesn't confirm what you already believe, it MUST be wrong, biased or an extension of a malign agenda.
The rise of "views not news", newsfluencers and news as "entertainment" has kind of predisposed people to connect dots: banal code commits or API change or a blog covering one thing more than another MUST be part to a broader, overarching plotline with heroes and villains in…

2025-10-03 16:28:40 GMT

A story in two images.
Just running it up the flag pole because from time-to-time, people do like to share their opinion that I cover GNOME too much on the blog. People perceive it as "bias", having "drunk Red Hat kool-aid", and other colourful descriptions.
It's not quite that deep.
I write about Ubuntu, and Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop by default.
That is why I cover GNOME-related stuff more prominently than, say, Xfce or Sway or YouTube-sired conspiracies over X11.
Just sayin'.
