I agree. Also one should be honest and say that
1. if you pay the experience on Twitter is much better than it ever was (longer posts, good video, interesting discussions, less spam)
2. #Mastodon is too prone to censorship via political activists putting pressure on admins for made up reasons
3. #Nostr is more censorship resistant, but is a lot smaller than Twitter and so it is quiet. But it allows notes in notes, has support for Markdown, etc…

It has been known for a long time that the most central problem on the #web was the lack of a micropayment system other than advertising, leading to the enormous investment into companies that could garner more and more data about individuals, as more data meant better-targeted ads, which returned 10-1000x more than plain ads.
#nostr's integration of #lightning [1] micropayment as an extra "like" feature into the #twitter-like user experience is a great live example of how new micropayment systems can change the game. It is live, and you can try it out [2] and send people micropayments for as It Is also valuable for helping people pay devs for the user interfaces, #relays that reduce spam, reward artists, etc.… Most importantly, it will allow journalists to be rewarded without us needing to take a yearly subscription to a magazine. There is too much content on the World Wide Web for me to want to subscribe to each major paper just because it has one great article I’d be happy to pay for. With governments no longer subsidizing journalism, they may again dare to take on their essential role of questioning it intelligently.
The Lightning network is open and could be used by any other protocol, such as #Mastodon or Tim Berners-Lee’s #Solid project, or much more.

the various filter options on #snort are very nice. #Global helps get an idea of what is going on worldwide, though it would help if one could filter it by language. I speak English, French and German for example. One could then add optional translation service. Indeed I could imagine a translation service relay could save by translating Notes once and then serving them later.

Strictly speaking I should not say “there are too many #bitcoin folks on #nostr” but rather that the proportion is a bit too high. But that will change over time.
#Nostr notes can’t be edited though, so I have to add that as an a comment to the original post above.
I guess that #mostr the Mastodon ⇆ Nostr proxy would find the wider use of a versioning of notes to be useful to better integrate with #Mastodon whose Toots can be edited.

Ok, so me:
Nostr is a decentralized platform: like Mastodon, but different.
* Mastodon works as a mini centralized social network that can federate posts (toots), and your identity is tied to one instance (e.g. mathstodon.xzy),
* #Nostr’s is a protocol (https://nostr.com) on which identity is via a public/private key which you enter into an App, like Damus, or many others you can find. (There is a list here: https://nostrclients.webflow.io/ ). There are also web apps and plugins for browsers to safely enter your private key to your browser and reduce the risk of key leakage.
The technical idea is simple: your app signs your posts, which are distributed to relays that can distribute them. You can save them to your own server if you wish too. People can comment on Notes with notes as I am doing now. But essentially, you can’t unsign your apps, and because they can spread it would be very difficult to shut down a conversation. But it is not synchronized like the blockchain: there is not one global pool of Notes.
Most interestingly, they integrated a micropayment system.
The problem with Mastodon is that admins are not full-time and can easily be pressured by political activists: calling someone a fascist is a simple way to do that. Most admins are not political scientists, so don’t know how to evaluate such a claim. On Nostr you can’t censor Notes, so one has to filter what you like yourself, and clients provide options for that. There is of course, a lot of nonsense to filter out. Social network filter is one way to get quality.
For the moment, there are too many bitcoins folks there. If you have bitcoin-related math, your Toots could be turned into Notes via the proxy we are using and garner a lot of following on #Nostr. :-)

Here is a process I am using to link up with people I know on #Mastodon from #Nostr.
1. I followed my Mastodon #mostr clone account on #nostr.
2. I also followed the #nostr account on #mastodon
3. When I see some post I like on #Mastodon I retweet it (retoot?), and then I can usually see it from #nostr.
4. I then follow the #Mastodon account via their #mostr handle
5. and perhaps repost that Toot here on #nostr, so that they can get a bit of visibility here too.
So now I post things that are potentially controversial on #nostr and leave the politically correct stuff on #mastodon. (The smallest deviation from the norm there leads to a visit from the thought police).

I have been using the AI-enhanced Warp Terminal written in #Rust
for 9 months now.
I like it: it is fast, looks good, and the #AI is very useful when I can’t remember what command to run. Of course, over time, I put together a list of HOWTOs for this, and I know my way around #Unix. But for newbies, it could be a huge timesaver. It is what I thought I would get when I first used a terminal in 1980.
(I thought I could ask the computer to solve the Rubik’s cube too).
But then I found that one had to read through man pages to learn to use a command.
It is also the first terminal I have encountered with a marketing team.

Speaking as someone who just came to the platform, I could not tell initially if there were a lot of people here or just very few. I did not want to follow all the people that were suggested to me in part because they all seemed overly bitcoin related. (I quite like Lightning btw, so one can slowly be converted :-)
But then not having followed a lot of people, my client was filtering the topics such as #scala. It took me some time to work out that I had to open the the filter on one client from close social network to the extended one (can’t remember quite which web client that was now) to see anything at all.
Then with the extended network set it still does not seem to be a lot of discussion on feeds like #scala or #RDF, well even less than on Mastodon which was not very busy either. So it helped when I worked out to add mostr.pub . Though I think tweets from there should be highlighted differently.
On an open social network one has to be able to see what the intermediary friends of friends are that led one to see a specific post, if only so that one remove some intermediaries that lead to too much spam, but also to understand how people are related.

Interesting. But I think #NIP98 has just been made obsolete by the #IETF publication of HTTP Message Signatures https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/ietf-http-wg/2023JulSep/0124.html .
That provides a way to sign HTTP headers with keys, and there is no reason one could not use the keys that #nostr uses, by either publishing them at an http location or using a #DID URI (did:key, or did:jws, ...) .
But you are right that it is similar to foaf+ssl, or WebID-TLS, though much more flexible in fact, since TLS can only sign the connection whereas message signatures can sign every request, and every request differently.

You need to look at #nostr, which solves the problems that you describe for #Mastodon
- accounts and posts are not tied to a URL, but to a public key, so there is no problem with migration between domains (they need to develop a story of key migration, but that is well-known territory)
- migration of user interfaces is easy (I use 5 regularly for their various advantages)
- there is a good payment story with lightning
- it solves the censorship problem, which is much worse on Mastodon than on Twitter. The problem is that Mastodon acts as a slander machine, spreading false rumours in that tags section and censoring people trying to give opposing points of views.

Ok so here is an idea for #nostrclients on how to display #narings [1] filters by social network.
It is really important to know what the social network graph through which one saw a post, so that one can see if some one of the people one is following is is linking to spammers. So when showing a #naring it would be good to show the shortest link to that node as a small (linear) graph.

Another thing. I created a relay filter just for #mostr the #Mastodon proxy, just to see what type of things are coming from that direction.
From time to time I want to look at the profile of someone there, but you only show mostr.pub . The interesting thing is that all the data about an identity is shown there in the encoded email before the “mostr.pub”. I could not find any way to have that information shown.
For all #nostrclients, #mostr posts should be highlighted somewhat differently from other posts, because they are quotes of other posts. Ie. the Principal speaking is
in the says logic [1] Mostr|SomeAgent , ie Mostr.pub quoting some agent. If we trust mostr when it speaks for Mastodon instances then we trust that the agent said what it said. But there is an indirection that newcomers may not know, and that #mostr and similar services should make explicit if they could. But that requires quoting data.

This possibility seemed to break down all possibilities of knowledge. Nozick [2] found an answer using counterfactual logic that depends on a distance relation between possible worlds. That world seemed far out in the 1980s and still does to most of us when we are sipping our morning cup of coffee. But what happens if similar problematic worlds become much closer to us? Do you think your neighbour is a #fascist? Perhaps a #communist even ready to kill your children? Do you perhaps even feel you are on the verge of being #genocided? Well those are symptoms of a 12 year growing #MiM attack.
I will need to update my paper now that #nostr is out since if you sign every note, that changes the argument. At least you know that the message has not been changed, and you could make it difficult for history to be rewritten as it was constantly in George Orwell’s 1984.

It seems like that could be a minor update to a little personal relay software:
to track a few relays and just store the responses too (trying to avoid spam somehow). But it clearly looks like this should be very light weight, and hardly use up any resources.

I'd argue the opposite, if you don’t mind.
The worst part of #blocking on #Twitter was that people would have a conversation with you in a thread and then when they did not like what was said would block you, removing all the context of the conversation, and also of all previous conversations.
That was a tactic loved by #trolls.
So it was clear that blocking should never have applied to existing Tweets.
Furthermore deleting should not have been allowed on Tweets a short time after they were posted or certainly commented on. Once you have engaged in a conversation your posts are no longer yours to remove. This problem was known to people from the earliest social network, the Well, which was destroyed by deleing of posts.
#Nostr gets that right. The longer you wait to delete the less likely it will work.
I am sorry to say, but #𝕏 is clearly a big improvement since Elon took over: longer tweets, markup, identity verification, financial support, all have improved the platform a lot.
The main problem remains the one that bothered me since the beginning was that it is centralised. #nostr is going the right direction.

#Solid should learn from both #Mastodon #ActivityPub and #nostr.
Here are initial thoughts:
1. Linking WebIDs to nostr keys could easily be done with an owl:sameAs statement

btw. What do #nostr folks recommend: did:key or did:jwk: or something else ???
2. The same could be done with redirecting if one loses one’s personal domain
old:WebID owl:sameAs new:WebID .
And a statement such as

3. The major innovation of #nostr is the use of keys and the signing of all content. That should be integrated into #solidproject.
(Should headers be added for each signed content? for example? A header like

Signature: …. <- using just released Signing HTTP Messages RFC? https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/ietf-http-wg/2023JulSep/0124.html
Interestingly that gives a reason for having server signatures that don’t sign the URL!
4. Another innovation is using the lightning network: Solid should integrate that.
Nostr makes a very good case that it works and is fun as one zaps people’s posts (note Apple asked apps to remove that feature!)
A Quick look at the protocol, and I wonder:
1. does one need sockets for posting content? Could that not just be a POST to a solid container?
2. Nip 01 comes with a simple query mechanism. My main problem is that these are not restful. If it returned just URLs for new content, that could be sent quickly down the wire. Even better with SPDY (still looking for a #scala implementation)
But an even lower cost search could be #LDES (Linked Data Event Streams https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/semic-support-centre/linked-data-event-streams-ldes ), which is just like RSS but with a tree structure and non changing
3. Also, the format is unnecessarily not extensible.
Still #nostr is a very good demonstration of what solid hyper apps are meant to be.

My father, 83, just returned from 2 weeks of singing camp in Romania.
He enjoyed the lessons but was nauseated by the repetitive serving of chicken, so he invited me and my mother to the restaurant.
My mother ordered a chicken, to my father's dismay.
In any case, this is what led me to mention that #chicken were descendants of #dinosaurs.
As my statement was doubted, I opened the #ChatGPT app on the iPhone and started voice dictation, which GPT does exceedingly well, btw.
From that question we went on to questions about when the dinosaurs were around, how old the earth was, when life started, how many cells we have in our bodies, etc… That made for a very interesting conversation. See for yourself:
