Rocky Linux 10 and compatible marks a big change on Linux, the end of X11. Will this affect Friction? No, our Linux binaries are already compatible with X11 and native Wayland. Friction will work out-of-the-box on Rocky Linux 10 and compatible.
We will continue to support both X11 and Wayland for as long as possible.

🎯 Roadmap/status update...
Based on testing and feedback from RC1 we have decided to do another release candidate. RC2 will feature some UI/UX changes that will improve your general workflow.
We aim to release RC2 this month, with a final 1.0.0 release in July.
Then all focus will be on v1.1... More improvement to the UI/UX and some new and shiny features.

It's not always easy to figure out where to put Friction. It's not really a compositing application, so it's not a direct competitor to After Effects, but it does effects and motion graphics and have basic audio/video support... It also does vector based animation for the web, so it should probably also be an alternative to Adobe Animate.

Friction can render whatever FFmpeg supports. But GIF is not a supported format, so you will need to enable "show all formats" and find GIF in the format dropdown. Note that the quality is horrible(!), you might need to add some FFmpeg specific options (see "advanced options"). I recommend you export a PNG seq and convert it to GIF using gifski.

Just tested MP4 (h264) and MOV (ProRes444) exported from Friction in various OSS editors, the files works as expected. Note that only Olive was able to use the ProRes properly (with alpha), but none of the editors had any issues with the MP4. Regarding kdenlive, we tested v24.05/v24.08, they worked fine. On v23.08 it detected 31fps instead of 30, so something is broken in that version.

VFR issues in kdenlive are not our problem. But we can of course add a VFR/CFR option in the renderer.

This release marks the end of development for the 0.9 series. The 0.9 series is now in maintenance mode, receiving only important bug fixes until the upcoming 1.0 release later this year.
