I decided to join the fun, at least for a bit, and have been pulled through 100 pages of The Fellowship already. It is kind of wild to return to this 1979 edition I bought as a 10 year old in WHSmith--to notice new things, and remember things I had forgotten. The little desperate acts of hope and kindness, that are set against an overwhelming historical sweep of devastation and loss. I can see why people are returning to this book now, in this moment.

Thanks for sharing it. You were very generous in your responses to questions that would have made me bristle.
I want to quote something beautiful you said in response to the somewhat ridiculous question of whether it is possible for computers to ever be conscious, if the latest Opus model or whatever isn't already:
---
I think all things are possible. But I don't think our contemporary computation is producing anything that can meaningfully or usefully be talked about in terms of consciousness. I think that's a wild and possibly dangerous mistake. I am someone who ascribes consciousness to mountains, and oceans, and to blades of grass. I fundamentally believe that consciousness is a vast universal field that underlies all living things. And so I have no problem with the idea of machines being conscious.

In that vein I have been enjoying Weird Studies' first episode in a series, taking a romp through LoTR:

I learned in the discussion at the end that Abigail Nussbaum is writing about her re-reading of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which apparently a lot of people are doing right now? Tolkien is having a moment...again. It's not hard to imagine why.

This was a fun podcast conversation about the twists, turns and intertwinglings of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas and its significance for speculative fiction and genre more than 20 years on.

"Resisting the annexation of our hearts and minds by Silicon Valley requires us not just to set boundaries on our engagement with what they offer, but to cherish the alternatives. Joy in ordinary things, in each other, in embodied life, and the language with which to value it, is essential to this resistance, which is resistance to dehumanisation."

... update from code4lib slack (since this post has circulated a bit more than my usual posts): it sounds like the conference organizers are considering alternative venues, and that the conference will likely be fully virtual if that falls through.

This is unreal. The 2026 code4lib conference has been cancelled unilaterally by Carnegie Mellon University because the Department of Education raised issues with the diversity scholarships (which have been constant for at least a decade, if not longer):
> An applicant must be a member of a group not well-represented within the code4lib community, including but not limited to: women, people of color, LGBTQ+, ability/disability, non-binary gender identities, etc.

I'm always a sucker for a good network graph visualization, and these are really top notch:
https://www.authoritarian-stack.info/
Because of the way the JavaScript was packaged I couldn't really tell how they were built, although it looks like it might be D3 based? If you have any tricks for providing insight please let me know.
I'm probably overlooking something obvious. But after spending a bit of time searching up the people and orgs involved I decided to drop them an email.

I'm experimenting with publishing short summaries of what I've been reading during the week. It uses the bookmark app I have running on a Raspberry Pi at home to add an entry to my static site: https://inkdroid.org/2025/11/02/shiori

for a brief moment I thought this was an #sts style reading group looking at a particular standard together, which I found oddly compelling...but this is fun too!

☾ hi I'm new here, thanks for being open to new instance members. My work focuses on software & design in digital preservation. I've been drawn here by all the posts I've seen over the past few years orbiting around sustainability and permacomputing -- especially how they relate to art practice.
