The larger earthwork was probably not defensible by the small number of men he had, so he built a smaller one which was. The windmill was used to pump salt water into a series of settling ponds and then into pan houses, the outline of only one of which can be seen clearly today. These had large iron pans with a large surface area and were heated by furnaces from below. It dates from 1369 and has an odd shape. It appears they never got around to building the nave. It's considered the church closest to the sea in Scotland. Could this have been a Episcopalian place of worship back when only 3 people could legally meet with a minister for worship at a time?
