Last Notes npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 2. Are there any legends or folk tales from the area you live now? There are lots of legends and folk tales from the area where I live. The best known one is that if you spend the night on Cader Idris, our local mountain, you will wake in the morning either mad or a poet. I haven't put this to the test myself though. A few years ago I made a video about some of the old legends. It's in Welsh, but there are English subtitles. https://youtu.be/viGXswUAsEA?si=9aBQ-ZDxVh7e1Oqa npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 26.Share a moment from your WIP when a character says one thing but means something completely different. Lord Becara is often insincere in what he says. He's been trying to ingratiate himself with the prince. Mark saw Lord Becara's jaw tighten momentarily, saw him open his mouth as though about to speak, then he closed it again and smiled tight-lipped before bowing and saying, "Please accept my apologies, my dear Prince. I have trespassed most grievously on your time." npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #writersCoffeeClub 25. Tell us about inspiration from an unlikely source. A long time ago now, but there was concern about the Welsh mountain Eryri (Snowdon) being sold. My husband showed me an article and I said, "I don't know what the fuss is about. The paths to the summits are public rights of way. The mountain isn't going anywhere." Then my writer brain went: Oooh! But what if it was going to be moved. And that as how I got the idea for my cosy fantasy "The Mountain that Moved." npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 24.Which character would survive the longest if suddenly dropped into our world with no money or identification? Mark would do best. He's from our world and the WIP is about how he copes when dropped into another world. Anywhere in the UK would be easy. He'd just have to hitchhike to his flat, get the spare key from his neighbour and he's home. Abroad would be trickier, but he could find the nearest British consulate and say he'd been mugged and had all his money and ID stolen. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 22 Our next featured creator enjoys making maps. Have you ever made a map? The early versions of the WIP had quite a pretty map, hand-drawn with colours for the trees. The current version of the WIP has a very scruffy sketch map which I find invaluable for reference. The country of Tiradel is alt-Wales, so that's the basis of the map, but placenames are very different. https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/117/484/252/777/250/473/original/0b5bf93db282379b.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 22.Share a sentence from your WIP that you're especially proud of. I can't think of one off-hand and I don't have time to search through the WIP in the hope of spotting one. Also, I remember Jo Walton saying there is a point in writing, like a spear-point, it's very small and sharp but because it's backed by the length and weight of a whole story, it has tremendous impact. But that same sentence, considered alone and out of context might appear banal or trivial. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #writersCoffeeClub 17. What are the defining traits of your niche in your genre? When I was trying for traditional publication, my problem was that the fantasy trilogy didn't fit into any of the niches the publishers were looking to fill. It was considered old fashioned and didn't include the things that were trending at the time. However, I'm hoping that when I self-publish the novels next year, there might be at least a few people who will enjoy a (possibly?) old-fashioned portal fantasy. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 5. What piece of backstory did you invent just for yourself that readers may never learn? Prince Gavran has a friend called Connor ap Dafydd. He's acted as a bodyguard to the king and nearly lost his life during one assassination attempt. His real name is Conrad Sinclair and Mark actually knows him slightly from when he was competing in three day events back home in the UK. So far Mark has no idea who Connor actually is. If/when I write Book 4, the secret will be revealed. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 14.If your MC could ask their future self one question, what would they ask? The obvious question for Mark to ask would be: Will I ever be able to go home to my own world? Huw would ask: Will I ever resolve my conflicted feelings about using magic? npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales Aethon ni am dro dydd Sadwrn diwetha'. Er... no. Do people do that? Looking at other answers to this prompt, it seems they do. If I were to try it, I'd have to learn an awful lot of song lyrics because at the moment, I know hardly any. Or to be more precise, I can still remember quite a few traditional folk songs from my teen years when I played guitar and sang, but dropping quote from them into a conversation would be weird. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 1 Draw a fish and share it. (It doesn't have to be brilliant.) I'm supposed to be making progress with the revision of Book 1, Part 2. I shouldn't be wasting time creating a badly drawn fish, but then I thought, why not? So here it is. https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/117/366/360/778/665/572/original/3ae1e1c76d419d0d.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 26. Authors talk about how smart their MCs or villains are, but have you ever written a slow-witted character? I don't actually talk about how smart my characters are. I don't really think about them that way. Some characters make bad decisions, sometimes because they're being badly advised. However, I have written a very slow-witted character, namely the magical sentient mountain in the cosy fantasy. The POV is actually omniscient, but the mountain gets a couple of short scenes. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #writersCoffeeClub 24. Do you write primarily for yourself or for a reader? I write for myself. I've always written the kind of story I like to read. When writing novels you have the characters and their stories in your head for months, if not years. I wouldn't want to have to live with stories I didn't enjoy. Besides, trying to follow trends is next to impossible. By the time you've spotted a popular theme and written your novel to fit it, something new will have come along. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 23 Choose a noun that is representative of you as a creative person. I'm going with 'persistence'. I've written on and off throughout my life. There have been times when, due to pressure of work or family commitments, I didn't have the time or energy to write fiction. But I've always come back to it. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WordWeavers 22. 1f you wrote a memoir on your writing journey so far, what would it be called? I might consider "Never give up, never surrender" as a title. I wrote fiction for fun when I was a child. As an adult I aimed for professional publication, but though I sold a few short stories to magazines, I never made it as a novelist. Now, however, I'm aiming to self-publish the novels that I have been working on throughout those years. I'm determined to become a published author in the end. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales My husband and I went for a walk on Sunday. It would be a fairly traditional combination of savoury herbs but there needs a hint of smokiness, so perhaps accompanied by a pot of lapsang souchong tea? npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…p9kg I'm so glad you survived. The clips were shot in April last year but I procrastinated badly on the editing because my original idea of describing the walk in detail was ending up very boring. Here we are, half way through the month already. We did quite a long walk yesterday, but as the weather was fine this morning I decided to walk up to my elderly friend's house. We hold a special Quaker meeting for her each month because at 102 years old, she's no longer able to attend the meetings in the village hall. On the way there I saw a lovely clump of foxgloves. https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/114/688/117/229/624/534/original/517dcdf1a73363f5.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…uk82 That's awful. It must have been done deliberately and maliciously. There were some trees vandalised on our local playing fields last year, but that was thoughtlessness and possibly drunken high spirits. True, a tree died just the same, but there's something cruel and calculating about ringing it. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…a0z2 It's a holiday here in the UK too. "Write what you know" is advice commonly given to new writers. I used to fight against this because I wanted to write about things beyond my life experience, but you do need to know what you're writing about. It's much better phrased as "know what you write". This could mean personal experience, but also includes research. You don't have to be an expert on everything you write about, but do learn enough not to make basic errors. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 16: Which creative activity would you like to pursue but can't? I have a tendency to want to Do All The Things, so if I see someone doing something creative I have the urge to try it myself. Examples would include, but not be limited to: spinning wool, weaving, playing a new musical instrument, needle felting, embroidery and many others. However, I know that it would be a passing fad. I don't have the time or the space for new hobbies. I'll stick to writing and photography. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WritersCoffeeClub 7 May: Share a special location you write in for inspiration. Now I'm retired, I only write at my computer desk. Also, I only sit down to write when I know what happens next. There are therefore no special locations where I go to write to gain inspiration. However, going for a walk -- it doesn't really matter where -- does get my creative mind working. Once I get back home, I'll add the new ideas to my notes so I'm ready for the next writing session. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…a0z2 The other word I have difficulty with is "lieutenant". I always have to pause and gather my thoughts before attempting that word which cropped up a lot in Book 1 of the trilogy which was mostly about a war. Fortunately the WIP (Book 3) contains very few cousins or lieutenants and I haven't yet found my Book 3 bugbear. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 5 May:. What word(s) always trips you up when writing? My vocabulary is good, my spelling is generally OK and the spell checker helps fix typos. But my fingers often have a mind of their own. For example they will insist on adding a final G to "cousin". (My fingers have typed words ending in "ing" so often that they can't stop after the N!) In Book 2 of the fantasy trilogy there were a lot of cousins, so I added "cousing" to the autocorrect to save me time in correcting it. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…zp6v 😆 I really did LOL at that. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales 17/52 for the 2025 Weekly Alphabet Challenge This week's theme was: Q is for Quay It was a lovely morning so I persuaded my husband to walk across the Barmouth railway bridge so I could photograph the quay. That's just cheating. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…myfn It is. Some sort of shared accommodation where you had your own place but with some shared communal areas might have been OK when I was young, but not now. Also, if you're living too closely together, there's always the danger that you end up spending more time talking about your creative projects than actually working on them. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 14 Apr: Would you enjoy living in a creative village/house/shared accommodation? Or do you already? I definitely wouldn't want to live in a shared house or any other kind of shared accommodation. I'm even more of an introvert now than when I was young. However, you could say that I already live in a creative village. My local friends are creative people. We meet and talk about what we're doing, yet have our own homes where we have quiet and privacy to do our creative work. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…zp6v LOL! If so, how do you use them, and what makes them better than other tools? I use spreadsheets a lot when writing. One obvious use is to track daily word count, but I actually use them for planning the story. They're useful for setting up timelines to keep track of characters, but I also create circular plot diagrams. A friend invented these to ensure that the ending resolved the plot elements set up at the beginning. https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/114/319/930/924/702/956/original/5353076525c85fc0.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales 11/30 for my photo-a-day in April Such a long run of cloudless blue skies feels very strange for Wales at this time of year, but that's what we're getting at the moment. The current WIP is a fantasy trilogy, so there's a lot of room. It's a portal fantasy, though once the guy from our world falls through into the other land, he's stuck there for the three books. Books one and two have powerful magic users. Book 3 is less magic focused, but it's still there. I have tried writing short stories without magic, but they feel flat and uninteresting until something magical intrudes. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 7 Apr: What’s your take on the “suffer for art” argument? When I was working full-time, I was prepared to put in a bit of effort in order to make time to write. For example I would get up early so I could write for 30-45 minutes before driving to work. But, apart from some rare situations, I don't think anyone should be writing if it causes actual suffering. There are so many other things to do with your life. Why make yourself miserable? Is the end product really worth it? npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales Many years ago I did a 365 photo project and took a photo a day for a year. I learned a lot from it, but never want to do it again because a lot of the images were taken just for the sake of taking something. Then more recently I challenged myself to take a photo a day during the 30 day months, so I'm giving that another try. The back garden is covered in celandines. It's interesting to watch how they close up at night and then open again with the sun. https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/114/263/871/546/852/412/original/740664c8e0cb38db.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WritersCoffeeClub 1 Apr: Do you include in-jokes, hidden messages, or “easter eggs” in your writing? Re in-jokes, I once wrote a story inspired by a challenge in a Babylon 5 Usenet group.* Someone suggested writing short stories in which the titles of B5 episodes were hidden. I wrote two and, afterwards, actually sold one of them to a magazine. Most of the titles were removed during revision and the story was expanded. But one or two are still in there. *Which tells you how long ago it was. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…pljk That cartoon explains my life so accurately. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…zp6v I've recently re-read the whole of the Thursday Next series and they were as enjoyable as the first time round. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales I was right up against the deadline for the weekly alphabet challenge on Flickr. This week's theme was: L is for Lost. I'd been looking out all week for a lost object to photograph. I didn't see anything, not even a lost glove on our walk last Thursday. Then, today, I had a burst of last minute inspiration. 🙂 https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/114/206/533/445/399/429/original/042bcb13699b5ad2.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…h460 I probably wouldn't have noticed the repetition of gossamer, unless it seemed an odd word to use in that context. But too many inexorables would definitely start to grate. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WritersCoffeeClub 16 Mar: What word or phrase do you tend to overuse? I don't think I overuse any words or phrases now. But when I've finished writing the first draft of the trilogy and start to revise the novels, I may spot something. There was a time, however, when I overused "suddenly" a lot. To cure myself of this, I added "suddenly" to the auto-correct in Word so that whenever I typed "suddenly" it would change to: DON'T USE SUDDENLY! I would then think again and rephrase the sentence. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 13 Mar: Shameless self-promotion day. Show us what you're proud of. Let's boost away. I don't have anything I can link to, but I'm proud of my progress with the final novel of the fantasy trilogy. I am adding words slowly but surely and the first draft is about one third done. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WritersCoffeeClub 13 Mar: Are you mindful of your readers’ expectations? How so? Not counting the handful of short stories I sold to magazine, the only readers I've had so far have been fellow writers in critique groups and the tutors on the creative writing degree course. The critiques and feedback I received on the early chapters of the current WIP were helpful in pointing out any inconsistencies. Also I am mindful of genre expectations. E.g. no segueing from fantasy into grisly horror. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…a0z2 I liked both Mary Stewart's adventure/romance stories and especially her Arthurian novels. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #ScribesAndMakers 3 Mar: Are you more productive during long stretches of free time, or when you have to squeeze creativity into your busy life? Since I retired, in theory I have plenty of free time, though I do still have things that I must do. You would think that I'd now be able to write faster, but the actual writing is only part of the process. I need lots of thinking time and that was possible even when working, for example during the daily commute. So my productivity is about the same. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…zp6v I haven't switched all my filters to "hide completely" yet, but I have thought about it. I'm also just skimming the news headlines. It's not as if following every little detail can make things better and it certainly makes my stress levels worse. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…a0z2 After many years of chasing traditional publication and never quite making it with the novels, it's nice to relax and just write for pleasure. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WritersCoffeeClub 6. Have you tried creating your own book cover designs? Share your work/attempts. This is an easy one to answer. No, I have not. Back when I was trying for traditional publication, covers were for the publisher to commission. Having decided to finish the stories for my own amusement, the novels will need covers because I want to create hard copies using POD so I can put them on my bookshelves. I will, therefore, need to think about cover design, but not just yet. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales I've just learned there is another hashtag similar to defaidodon, namely #asstodon. This is for photos of donkeys and also mules. I don't have many donkey pictures, but I will look out for photo opportunities in the future. Here's a cute little donkey (or perhaps a mule?) from a few years ago. https://toot.wales/system/media_attachments/files/113/912/223/197/411/070/original/98ac87049828c4e2.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…a0z2 It doesn't seem to be a popular sub-genre these days, so I'm writing my own stories. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #WritersCoffeeClub 13. What’s your favourite trope? Do you lean into it for your work or shy away? I'm not really sure what counts as a trope and what is just a feature of a genre, but I am fond of the "person from our world ends up in a world where magic works" idea. And yes, that trope is used in the fantasy novels I'm writing. Another I've seen mentioned was "friends into lovers", and that occurs in my novels too. And finally I do like a nice platonic relationship in stories. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…zp6v I do love your Friday sparkly dancers. For some years I lost the enjoyment due to chasing the dream of professional publication. Now I've let that go, I can write just for fun and as a form of mental exercise. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #writersCoffeeClub 12/29: What are your feelings toward readers? I used to want readers and wanted to share my stories with others in the hope they would enjoy them as much as I'd enjoyed thinking them up. However, other than a handful of short story sales, I never achieved professional publication. After completing a creative writing degree with the OU, I stopped writing fiction for quite a while, but I've now decided to finish all the unfinished novels just for my own enjoyment. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…98e3 Dw i'n meddwl bod y tyllau yn y mur o gwmpas yr ardd jyst yn gwneud y fynedfa'n edrych yn fwy ffansi. One issue is that these day young fathers often take their kids out without the mother. What is a man to do with a small daughter who needs the loo? Does he take her into the gents where she will have to pass men using urinals? Or does he brave the ladies? I haven't personally seen that happen, but friends have and said the women were perfectly fine about it. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales @nprofile…7wld @nprofile…rcay Has this ever happened, i.e. a man entering toilets designated for women and then trying to excuse his presence by claiming he identifies as a woman? Wouldn't he more likely just say, "Sorry, I didn't see the sign, I thought it was the gents."? If a man wants to assault a woman, the little icon of a stylised woman on the door is not going to stop him. But right now in the US cis women who don't look sufficiently "feminine" are being challenged in women's toilets. npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales #SilentSunday https://cdn.masto.host/tootwales/media_attachments/files/113/498/635/167/232/503/original/6b5221fb3a213ff8.jpg npub1vm2vmgkjees40k65nl02kndld7mh6xwjdqtq67jcd3mq0cnfmyds6ftlg4 Helen in Wales Mae fy ffêr yn teimlo'n lawer gwell rŵan felly dydd Iau diwetha' es i efo fy ngŵr am ddaeth cerdded bach ar hyd y Llwybr Mawddach.
