Yep that's what will happen, some clients will and some won't, and we will just slowly bleed off more users who get frustrated and don't really understand why their replies are broken. And it circles back to my original note, we don't give two shits about users here, all about the devs and what they want.
Yes nip04 is incredibly broken and there is broad consensus that it's so, and now we've basically given up on dms. And now we are doing the same thing to threads, effectively giving up on all of nostr
Block didn't even do a real implementation in the end they just made their own custom relay that only works with buzz. It doesn't interoperate with any other clients.
It won't become the standard because we will lose the genesis of nostr, you can't transition out of backwards compatibility, you either just give up the last 5 years of threads or you support two standards or you have a broken ux. Those are the options now.
And for what? All clients grab reply counts to display feeds so we download the exact same amount of data. Literally all downside zero upside.
