On October 16, 1968, American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos, after winning gold and bronze in the men's 200-meter race, raised black-gloved fists, wore only black socks, and wore 'Human Rights Badges' during the medal ceremony to support the Black Freedom Movement. This led to their suspension and expulsion from the Olympics (!). Australian silver medalist Peter Norman also wore a Human Rights Badge in solidarity.
