I won't excuse them not getting additional education outside of school but the baseline wasn't great and I think its understandable that if an educational system is actually good there should be a similar baseline on subjects like history.
Even if many Americans did pay attention in class, for many these lessons were left out because they were thought to be too advanced*.
*Texas has had a stranglehold of textbooks so there's that too.
