Dr. Liara Gonzalez, associate prof of gastroenterology and equine surgery, is pioneering research that using normothermic machines prior to transporting intestines for transplants.
Static cold storage for over 6 hours has shown that the organs will sustain moderate damage to epithelial cell lining and cell barriers. This causes intestinal transplants to have a failure rate of around 40%. The first part of the study wants to see how much longer organs can be stored if kept in a normothermic machine prior.
