Open adoption basically means that (almost) no one is denied to adopt an animal just from their answer on a form. Instead, the adoption coordinator would have a conversation with potential adopters to get a better feel for their situation. The idea was to simplify and humanize the adoption process. Proponents of open adoption believe that owning a dog or cat should not be only for the well-to-do and the best of the best. They believe open adoption will not only allow regular families to adopt, but also help with finding the right fit. Opponents argue that it will allow more people who shouldn't allow pets to adopt, or give people who are not financially stable even more of a money burden. There is also the fact that conversation based adoptions are going to take up more of the shelter employee's time. https://i.poastcdn.org/30d2538253ffd37666828ca53c23ee4aacf4b16fa2ab949d8c78854f66e9f187.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I think that info is really disingenuous. Holstein is THE smashed and slammed cow for milk production. They are the most efficient cow producing 32,000 lbs of milk in a 305 day lactation, and the most numerous milking cow. They are commonly A1A1 or A1A2 as well. Thus, western cattle more commonly are going to have A1 milk. Jersey, Guernsey, Normande, and Brown Swiss breeds have a higher percentage of A2 genes. Part of the reason I am actually for A2 milk production is it helps support farmers of rare and endangered breeds of heritage cows, ever since Holstein became the standard for factory farming. It allows a milk market for other farmers to squeeze into. extension.umn.edu/dairy-milking-cows/a2-milk-and-a2-genetics Not to say people should AVOID A1 milk tbh, I don't think that's a fair assessment either. I haven't found anything bad about it, besides it may be harder to digest compared to A2. Also there's a bit of an appeal to nature or whatever here. I'm sure there's a lot of shit proto-indo europeans did 5k years ago that you wouldn't like to do today. AND Allow me to be a bit of a bloomer here, I haven't seen the food pyramid in schools I've been to anymore and parents generally seem to know it is bullshit now. I just don't think they replaced it with anything decent yet... The push for cereal being healthy though has really fucked a lot of kids lol npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir what npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I've already went on my A2 milk spiel before - I know because I was literally posting about it as I was learning about it. It's warming up, so if you haven't been using flea/tick meds year round (you should), you need to start back up! https://i.poastcdn.org/3756634a9e80d5d964c13a5f08aa197c6b6e7b99fa5278bd311cc41a58fbe6fd.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Alright it is getting warmer out, I think it's time to go over a sensitive topic; Outdoor & Indoor/Outdoor cats. I guess I would like to preface this with saying, I am not totally and completely against outdoor cats. Shelters will often have a host of cats that don't do well inside, like cats that grew up outdoors or cats with incontinence or cats that are very easily over-stimulated, or semi-feral. Without people willing to keep them indoors/outdoors or outdoors only, they would be euthanized. However, I do believe that if you're getting a new cat you should test out keeping it indoors first. And I believe kittens should absolutely be kept indoors. For a multitude of reasons; 1) Cat health. You already know cats get hit by cars, eaten by wild animals (or other pet animals), get into fights with other cats, and contract lethal and incurable diseases. But do you know at what rate? Because it probably seems like a far off issue if it didn't happen to you. The National Traffic Safety Administration reports roughly 5.4 million cats are struck by cars a year. 97% of those cats do not survive the incident. There are probably many more that are not reported. According to the Humane Society of America, out of the 22,000 cats that entered their system and had a non-live outcome, the most common reason was FeLV. Even among indoor pet cats, it is estimated 3-5% have FeLV; the rate for outdoor cats is suspected to be much higher. Cats with FeLV are not expected to live past 3y Estimated 4% of cats in the US are suspected to have FIV - 75% of FIV+ cats are males. FIV positive cats usually present as normal, until the autoimmune system starts causing havoc or a normal URI turns into a deadly situation. After infection, the median lifespan is 5y. There is no way to even guess how many cats are killed by dogs, cats, other domestics, wildlife, or people, because the vast majority of the time the body will not be found. However, if you look at lost animal statistics, one study found that 34% of cats went missing and was never found, with 2% being found dead. When entering shelters, cats have between 1.5-5% chance to be returned to owner. Which brings me to 2) Wildlife. Not only are cats sometimes the sole or main factor for a species being endangered, they are sometimes the sole reason a species goes entirely extinct. It is estimated that cats will kill 1.3 - 4.0 billion birds and 6.3 - 22.3 billion mammals every year in the united states. Based on one study, cats were found to bring home less than a quarter of the animals they kill, and one study found they will only eat 30% of prey killed. Also cats get a variety of wonderful butt worms from eating wildlife. Cats also fuck up our major flagstone species as well; They can spread their diseases to Bobcats and Catamounts and other big cats via indirect contact with saliva. Cat shit can spread toxoplasmosis into waterways and affect frogs, toads, turtles, reptiles, and even fish. Cats actually caused a toxo outbreak in some sealions in california, which kills it rapidly. Toxo can infect bears, deer, moose, bison, marine mammals, marsupials, small mammals, and even birds. They're fucking up primates in south America currently too. And not as common, but domestic cats also hybridize with excessively rare wild cats like the european wildcat, which used to have populations in England, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, and France. They are NOT just feral domestic cats, they evolved parallel to the domestic cat, but IIRC I think they are more or less extinct and all hybridized. The Humane Society of America reports that 93% of owners that let cats free roam will lose at least one cat outside. That rings true for me as I've lost both of my indoor/outdoor cats due to letting them free roam. I get it if you already have an indoor/outdoor or outdoor only cat. Or you get a cat that's half wild, or doesn't use the litterbox, etc. I'd prefer a cat have a home than be euthanized at the pound. But I am asking that you maybe just consider keeping your next cat indoors, maybe with supervised outdoor access https://i.poastcdn.org/36fe0d02601c4c753cc099aec2bb7097a4d64b155e9b59048de7c70b926a2c9e.png https://i.poastcdn.org/4e349062f8c015a75830a0f0c8c532061ebc3f3470a0e19e4909cf618f86557c.png https://i.poastcdn.org/27b626fa59a45a6735b4fd750cf5ff96014605bcd09a24fee17b8481f3d5b8cb.png https://i.poastcdn.org/b1fc4178b96439674800d6582fe277a745326568b814cc08d9ee144b4b97bb30.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I forgot to show y'all the first bee of the year I saw last week! https://i.poastcdn.org/21c14086d860575237e70c117e07bf4f8c9a32f158f6365de17fd9baba8efcbd.jpg npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Good morning fedi friends Daily reminder the jew fears the indoor eel pit https://i.poastcdn.org/76815095835f543dc34ac0182b698e710cfe8d3358ae10b5537a707129a32b10.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Yes actually, snake on the left is Supply i believe, meaning the other with the laptop is Demand npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Here's a fedi pro-tip, that I actually originally heard on fedi; Don't have an argument/debate with more than one person. Whenever I see big ass useless lawns I just get bitter now. https://i.poastcdn.org/fa58c133117bdf5859241f6536c58c9944bfcf69cf5e07947c8c30d0e640d5d5.png https://i.poastcdn.org/cd92723a789353e2a0e3df88fd43c4efae95466f8793851f3800dc4f9a383179.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Get your head out of the gutter https://i.poastcdn.org/3e7cbda52d224370144dded9224c875fc08baabd71c3c66aeae892a60fa99c90.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir OK I am actually really excited now because I am seeing all these gab refugees talking about farming and gardening and animal husbandry and horticulture and shit. I personally don't like how it was built. It was built well, the material was expensive, but the way they built it makes it a nightmare for regular maintenance. However I will deal with it because like I said, expensive material and pretty much already built For example I'd love an egg retrieval door, also makes cleaning a lot easier. I'd also really like the coop to be off the ground; just a tad easier to keep predators out. Inside I'd prefer to have the perches level; chickens will fight for the highest perch and having them all the same height can help control that issue. However my coop doesn't have much space and I'd likely have to do a ladder type of deal. https://i.poastcdn.org/9c4547160dd42016cceeb30e30052a252e827cb41163d65e9c339280f80028e7.png https://i.poastcdn.org/6a94470f69fa4d9db416b85f627656b1952458ef18ead8166f56b479506120c9.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir If you just make a lean to with some wire sure it can be very inexpensive, and people are quite free to do that. One of the tattoos, which says 'Made in Mexico', is linked to the "Los Mexicles," a street gang linked to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. At least one tattoo they were able to tell was administered with no analgesic - they believe multiple people held the cat down while one did the tattooing. Despite this, the cat is very friendly and has no tattoo related infection. The cat was found with mild ear and eye infection, and with open sores especially on paw pads. It's alleged owner, Ernesto Alfredo Pinon de la Cruz, was shot and killed January 5th 2023 after attempting to escape prison. After which, gang members in the prison took up caring for the feline. After the prison break, officials raided the prison to find 21 rifles, 900 bullet rounds, bulletproof vests, alcohol, and drugs hidden in the jail. Among those, they also found 7 dogs, 1 cat, and a mechanical bull. The sphinx, now named Kilo according to some sources, could not be returned to next of kin due to the abuse and neglect. After investigation, the cat was adopted out to an anonymous person. https://i.poastcdn.org/61b65c3dd978d8618e208a249ffa8cf87bc7cdc34d9c44ef7996ab42df782282.png https://i.poastcdn.org/a767d6e8b273e010c3231b75b45145497b9c115e696184d1fd1816e91fd6930b.png https://i.poastcdn.org/70d02164d08b178f0222e592e9191fd685523b087ff0518cc19f245fa0e348e3.png https://i.poastcdn.org/581d286ffe5380d3acfe3f9fffd8027646e99a3a7294204234fb0df5a2997869.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I have been getting A LOT of questions regarding cats vomiting, so let's delve into this topic real quick. Firstly, vomiting is just a single symptom. There are LOTS of things that can cause vomiting, from your cat just missing a meal to total organ failure. There is not much anyone can tell you from your cat puking a lot. So there's a lot of questions to ask; 1) When did the symptoms start? How frequent is it, and when was the last time they vomited? Does it appear to happen at particular times (only at night, after eating, when coming in from outside, etc). 2) What does the vomit consist of? (clear/foamy, bile (yellow liquid), blood, digested or undigested food, hair)? 3) How is your cat’s appetite? Do they eat quickly? Drinking normally? 4) Are they defecating and urinating a normal amount? Are there any issues using the litter box? 5) What diet are they on? How long have they been on that diet? Are they free fed (food out at all times)? How much are they getting fed and how often? Any human food, table scraps, bones, or treats? 6) Does your pet tend to chew on/eat non-edible things it shouldn't, such as toys, clothing, string, hair ties etc? 7) Any exposure to toxins like poisons, antifreeze, medications, drugs, toxic plants, etc? 8) Has there been anything new or stressful added (new household member, remodeling, new noise, new smells, etc)? 9) Have you traveled recently with your cat? Out of state/country? 10) Any medications your cat is taking including supplements, heartworm, flea and tick medication, including any medical history and diagnoses? Vaccinations? 11) Is your cat indoor only, indoor/outdoor, outdoor only, or indoor with catio/leash walks? 12) Any other symptoms you're noticing in your cat or other animals in the house (painful, restlessness, diarrhea, limping, other animals vomiting, etc etc)? Granted it will depend on the individual animal on what the vet will want to do next. Perhaps a blood test might be in order to get a gauge on blood cell count, check up on how our organs are plugging away. I think an x-ray might be a good idea to help rule out foreign body if that's on the table - may not be necessary in all cases, and an x-ray won't be able to pick up all obstructions, sometimes an ultrasound or exploratory surgery might be needed. God help you if food allergy is on the table - allergen tests are expensive. I usually tell people to cut out all treats and scraps, outdoor cats need to start being contained (they can and will get food elsewhere) and start doing food trials, maybe start with a month or two at a time until you find a food that works. Or shell money out for the allergy test to get an anwser faster. Sometimes the issue is simply too many treats or scraps, which is why I always advise no scraps and controlled amounts of treats. It could also be caused by a cat eating too quickly, in which case a food puzzle or lick mat may be required to slow them down. Cats may also vomit if they have not eaten in a long time, so making sure they eat at least 2x a day might help. There are some supplements that might help cats with a weak immune system or gut issues like a probiotic such as fortiflora or a supplement like lysine. Trying some prescription dewormers may also be warranted - many parasitic infections may also cause vomiting. Some cat breeds are more likely to have IBD, such as Bengals and Savannahs. IBD is chronic and may also cause vomiting and there is no cure, although it can be managed. https://i.poastcdn.org/dc61b3800abc0e31380d9ed5b82075f90d1a3b3b5bd0f34412a68bda5efc00e8.png https://i.poastcdn.org/ac24e65030411d318c5e2826265af7b8988f3d8364e7c14645249135a59ea381.png https://i.poastcdn.org/f84de2f1aea9fb9417cb618ad00ec4bed8fbc3dae2a6e7eab590b66a40648294.png https://i.poastcdn.org/f1641ec729ad34d781e31e2583803657676c6816b9fa32ec0301fc0ad03f2cb3.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir You've heard of dog racing. I'm just in close proximity to pilots, which is why this even bugged me to begin with. https://i.poastcdn.org/5ca0264ce60d3e7dc7339cf45b41efa3759f86479be7e762d0f2aca256d75639.png https://i.poastcdn.org/700ec22367b3fcd8fd6e649707bc9de4f9cca5272503b91040feac5627a3957c.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I want to know how they are unidentified? It took about 2 minutes for the footage to reach earth. However this is a bit misleading; Taters has not actually gone to space. They uploaded the video of Taters on the spacecraft prior to launch, then streamed that video from the spacecraft to earth. youtube.com/watch?v=GvJtVOmFs5Q&t=9s npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir An angelfish at Denver Zoo getting a CT scan Tfw a fuckin fish has better healthcare than you :crying: https://i.poastcdn.org/9aaf164f36fbeec2750d9b989d845d201d6cb2c7d5925cd4980d145e7891409c.jpg npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Pet Business released it's top pet products of 2023. There's probably 50+ products and companies on here. They also included things like best website design and best product packaging as well which I thought was interesting. I figured I'd highlight some things I thought were interesting in comments to this post. So instead of one huge boring post I would make many tiny boring posts. Link if you want to check it out for yourself - I found some interesting products, you might too. digitalmag.petbusiness.com/petbusiness/library/item/december_2023/4154165/?oly_enc_id=2571D1138245A9V https://i.poastcdn.org/7f8713974a2ccd015d72ccbc9c055e4e306fd3b0a9932779bf64eb688eaadf59.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I'm glad you asked. I'll give you the short version. My main concern with doodle breeders are the ethics behind breeding them. There is a lot that *should* go into dog breeding to ensure that the breeder isn't simply adding to the overpopulation of dogs in animal shelters, creating unhealthy dogs that will suffer and cause their family grief, or create an unstable animal that will suffer and cause others to suffer as well. The issue with doodle breeders is that they are breeding for a fad. These 'breeds' are not actual breeds; you can even see just physically how much the dogs can differ from one another. Just like there is no physical standard, there is no behavior standard either. There is no breeding for the betterment of the breed as there is no standard; they are quite literally breeding to pump out dogs. Check out how many doodle rescues and how many poodle crosses are currently in shelters. There is no push to try to make these dogs stable and predictable. It is also apparent how little is thought of in breeding when taking into account the types of breeds getting mashed together. Some of these animals having very clashing temperaments which can create neurotic dogs. Many of these breeds have polar hair types, which makes grooming excessively difficult and undercoat matting is a huge problem with many individuals. Then there's the health aspect; doodle breeders only seem to test for health issues seen in both breeds (IF they are a rare doodle breeder that health tests at all). Really, health tests need to be done on each breed for most issues as many of these hereditary health issues have several genetic markers or are not dominant. And these health tests often need to be done yearly, not just once while the animal is young and healthy. Ultimately it's a cash grab. These people are scamming pet owners to pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars on these dogs that they barely put an ounce of money, thought, or effort into. They don't care what they are creating, they don't care who is adopting from them, as long as they can make money. I believe if a breeder is going to make a conscious decision to breed an animal, being the sole reason for the animal's existence should make the breeder responsible for giving that creature the best potential outcome it can have. npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir I would love the names of said books, as I have not come across such things in my own study. Generally I come across books that advise to cull man biters. Pit bulls aren't supposed to bite men, because in dog fighting there is a referee. You bite or kill the referee, there's no more sport. That referee has to be in there to determine what's legal and illegal moves and manipulate the dogs as needed - obviously, the owners are not allowed to touch the dogs during a fight. An American Pit Bull Terrier is prone to dog aggression and small animal aggression, but not stranger aggression. Those are the 3 genetic markers of aggression. Pit bulls also are not genetically prone to not show signs before reactivity; they base a lot of their dog shows on them showing signs of being reactive. Meaning they give you signs when they want to fight. Otherwise, people lose time and money on a dog that isn't 'game'. Although I'd argue 99% of pit bulls out there are not American Pit Bull Terriers but instead almost a landrace dog. They are not bred with anything in mind let alone dog fighting. I think that is also why we see so many low energy, dog and cat friendly apparent pit bulls. Fighting rules are actually very interesting, but I think a lot of people misunderstand fighting rules due to media portrayal. npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Granted there wasn't many reported cases of dog bites before modern technology, there were not many reports I could find of canine fatalities that were not intentional back in the 1800's. Pits were brought into America by the Irish and touted as a well rounded dog that could do multiple tasks. While Labradors were mostly only used for retrieving and collies were mostly only used for herding and beagles were mostly only used for hunting, pit bulls were used for all of it, and thus they were considered a good dog for your average man so they wouldn't need to buy 2 or 3 dogs, they just needed one. Some people would also gamble on their pits at night in dog fighting. Despite being a very common dog back then, and even being used in blood sports against midgets, there were not many recorded deaths by dogs in general let alone pit bulls. Granted, dogs were also commonly used to torment and sometimes kill slaves and presumed criminals, I did not account for deaths that were intentional. I do wonder too if some of the excessive death and mauling is caused from our much closer relationship with dogs - they used to be kept outdoors and away from the family except maybe when working. That's another thing - we worked the shit out of these working dogs, and a working dog that doesn't have a job will find themselves a job. Also there's also more people in general, which I'm sure has to inflate the numbers a bit. npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Very rare that I see a cat with this much confidence with a dog :aiwow: they look very cute together! Firstly coyotes are more likely to run from or attack dogs. Secondly, coyote breeding season is exceptionally short and the male coyotes get to town during that season, whereas domestic dogs are year round. Here are some examples of mostly lab tested coydogs - I believe many of these were used in breeding programs. 1st photo: Left: 95+% Coyote Middle: 50% Coyote, 50% Border Collie Right: 57.9% Coyote 26.9% Border Collie, 9.4% Husky, 5.8% Welsh Sheepdog 2nd photo: 50% Coyote, 28.1% Cattle Dog, 16.5% Catahoula Leopard Dog, 5.4% American Leopard Hound 3rd photo: 86% Coyote, 5.1% Sheltie, 8% Supermutt 4th photo: 50% Coyote, 50% Border Collie 5th photo: Assumed 50/50 coyote/husky mix https://i.poastcdn.org/6c36d0fd7b6a63c7dc1049987aef742f431121824aeba07a3e06e4b477947393.png https://i.poastcdn.org/87319995ae95628a5726863639f39065757d04c6d7704e95138156d279daf508.png https://i.poastcdn.org/9f994e274159a4e62366e29c55bba3146b6e3e2717c03fc786660dd5fad94df2.png https://i.poastcdn.org/c933bc7f3cbcf3bc105cd752288e4269fdad64e431ead85f43eb68000176458b.png https://i.poastcdn.org/2db56114f52c83516d80d79b4671662b4b08298f5b8aca57081b304af8ff4270.png npub100zpzjxhdr9dc2hjetc2z3gccg5ru2m2qgrr9ve46ry5w8hr27fq8ww3l7 Tapir Lol that's fucked up Maybe that's why they always look sad https://i.poastcdn.org/2c8be966992f5e0a105c790b807423c63f3ac0d36c8ab34ac85706365d1187df.png
