With both USB and Firewire, the CPU must maintain this buffer anyway. What's worse, with Firewire it must be maintained until it's fully played, as opposed to just send-and-forget with USB. Overall, Firewire seems like much more of a hassle when it comes to CPU utilisation and memory.
