Output stream isn't decoded infinitely far into the future. The buffer in music software is usually small enough, on the order of a few samples. With both USB and Firewire, the CPU must maintain this buffer anyway. What's worse, with Firewire it must be maintained until it's fully played, as opposed to just send-and-forget with USB. Overall, Firewire seems like much more of a hassle when it comes to CPU utilisation and memory.
So again, the joke's on you.
