I have about seven of them and sometimes renewing some of them fails, but they send you an email notification anyway so you can see what went wrong and do it manually. Some of my certs have failed to renew last weekend, probably due to connectivity issues, but have been renewed successfully yesterday — it's mostly reliable once you make it work.

It had worked exactly the same way in Skype, even the video calls had been p2p, I'm not sure if it started with MS acquisition or earlier, but they began phasing out the p2p parts at some point — but even when it was Microsoft already, file transfers were still direct, they weren't uploaded anywhere for the other party to download it, one party initiated the transfer, the other one had to accept and choose the directory to save the file in, I don't remember when everything started to get uploaded to "the cloud", but AFAIR, not even that long ago, less than a decade.

What do you mean? It still has to know whether the device is ready to receive new data, you can't just shoot the whole five minute song into it in five seconds, it's not "fire and forget" like you said. There is still a buffer.

Once again you are taking this conversation elsewhere. DMA is easier on the CPU — that's my only point. Can you get away without it? You sure can, USB audio interfaces do exist and even somehow work, probably not very well :marseysmug2:
Does it make sense in your particular case? I don't know! There are always others: now imagine you are sending not stereo data, but working with eight output channels. And recording from eight more? In 192 kHz 24-bit? Still doesn't matter?
Point is: writing to local memory and reading from it is the cheapest operation possible — there is nothing you can do about it. Whether it would yield a significant enough difference in your particular use case is irrelevant :marseyshrug:
Speaking of implementation, if managing the buffer was hard, imagine what would be happening if you're playing back and recording multichannel audio simultaneously and it all also has to be synchronised somehow, considering that soundcard isn't the only device occupying the bus, yer moush also requests audience and you have to oblige — it would be a total mess. Of course most of that is managed by driver and operating system so you won't have to worry about it, same as with Firewire really.

That's an insane amount of bullshit here, sir!
Had it been the case DMA would have never existed in the first place. It might take certain effort to manage the buffer — and it does anyway, independently on the way you transmit the data, some buffer is always present, at least to keep a certain number of full samples.
But it's not rocket surgery, I think some sort of ring buffer is used. Or maybe two buffers are used — when the device is finished reading one of them, it issues an interrupt and CPU can start filling it again while the device is working with the other one, they keep being switched until the playback is finished. It sure doesn't have to be infinite.
Details of implementation aren't really important, what is — that writing to local memory and just notifying the device that new data is present so the device can read it independently of CPU is a way cheaper operation than pushing ALL THE DATA through the bus using that same CPU.
Some feedback from the device is present in both cases: there could be a buffer underrun or the opposite — the device might be overwhelmed with data and you have to stop transmitting it, it's not like you can shoot all data down the USB bus as fast as you can. It's just that the way to put new data into it is a matter of writing to local memory with DMA — a very cheap operation, compared to… anything really.

I don't have any USB output devices at hand to perform such a comparison, but it can't "not exist" even in theory, it's DMA — writing to mapped local memory vs sending data to USB bus. But it might be infinitely small on modern powerful system of course.
You can compare USB and PCI devices you have, it should be the same as Firewire: the way they negotiate stuff on initialization is different, but the way they access memory should be the same.
PCI device has to utilize DMA of course — if might not, like you yourself have said, it might be even such an abomination as PCI device that is a USB controller to which real device is in turn connected.

I have an external USB audio interface BTW — it's a microphone that came with Rock Band. I have 55SH Series II too, but it doesn't convey this spirit of underground hip-hop properly. This Rock Band one is a real microphone on one hand, but it still sounds very authentic, close to what in-ear headphones plugged into line input of old laptop would sound like :marseysmug2:
