also disagree but with an interesting twist: I think what this discussion is edging towards is that LN as the ecash anchor makes niches of digital trust/credit uniquely possible and even attractive (I’m not gonna use any cognates of “custodial” coz there is a whole other splinter of this thread where I say it’s inaccurate and unhelpful).

it might be technically possible to do ecash directly onchain, but what if: i) the intended “swap” value is higher than the onchain fee rate? ii) part of what you are doing is mixing? iii) the use case requires instant redemption, transfer, reuse, etc (maybe because it’s part of an automated process)?
