I don't have any USB output devices at hand to perform such a comparison, but it can't "not exist" even in theory, it's DMA — writing to mapped local memory vs sending data to USB bus. But it might be infinitely small on modern powerful system of course.
You can compare USB and PCI devices you have, it should be the same as Firewire: the way they negotiate stuff on initialization is different, but the way they access memory should be the same.
PCI device has to utilize DMA of course — if might not, like you yourself have said, it might be even such an abomination as PCI device that is a USB controller to which real device is in turn connected.
