The U.S. economy has hit a "stall speed" and could weaken even further from here, according to David Rosenberg, founder and president of Rosenberg Research. The 1.3% growth in the U.S. economy from January through March confirms its weakness, with a risk of even more weakness in the second quarter. Rosenberg believes that if the economy continues to decelerate, a recession could occur. The catalyst for a "bullish macro view" used to be the excess pandemic-era savings, but those have already been spent. The upcoming non-farm payroll report on June 7 has been skewed by the birth-death model, with half the gains in the non-farm payrolls coming from it. However, Rosenberg does not expect the print to be negative, but rather fairly soft for the second month in a row.
