I see a more immediate use to improve performance in the client side. Right now a mobile app connecting to 6 or 10 relays consume a lot of bandwidth (and other resources).
A personal relay/server could serve as an aggregator, where you can even implement your own filtering rules, instead of bloating the client app with it.
