It's not really trivial when you can modify a SQL database without an audit trail. Blockchain relies on the output of the previous block to determine the next block so if you go back and alter it, it invalidates blocks forward.
These are actual benefits known to blockchain, and keep in mind I am saying blockchain which can exist outside of cryptocurrency. You can have blockchain without being tied to cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency happens to be one of the most well known uses of it
