The topic of the conversation is not about natural selection and genetic variation, its about the number of species on planet Earth since the "emergence of life". Even when we allow 3 billion years for "evolution" to take place, the number of unique species (in the trillions) going trough "natural selection and genetic variation" shall exceed the 3 billion years manifold, like 300 billion or even more.
