I think the main issue I encounter in the challenge labs for my certification is that since I'm a sysadmin, I approach the labs from a sysadmin perspective and tend to discount the possibility of someone setting up their servers in a comically incompetent way. Like for instance I wouldn't think of scanning for externally accessible anonymous windows shares because come on!
