A final consideration: heat. Phones are not designed to be run at 100% CPU for long periods of time, hell, not even 50%. The batteries will swell and become a fire hazard. Even if you can remove the battery, which on many of them you can't, they still may not be able to dump heat quickly enough during an initial sync or even normal node operation. This leads to instability and quick death of the hardware. Many Android ROM's will kill high CPU tasks randomly and there's no way to disable that.

I use Android for #BOINC and mining Gridcoin (putting energy towards medical and space research). And let me tell you, finding Android hardware and getting it to work reliably in high-load scenarios is an absolute mess. Granted, it's some of the most efficient compute-per-watt you can get for CPU power, but it's a pain.
