a big issue is that many people have a friend who got the COVID vaccine and then had a medical emergency shortly thereafter.

The fact that the emergency probably would've been worse or quicker without the vaccine can't be known, they just see a sample size of one and a correlation -- possibly a sample size of their beloved mom or husband. They can't see the thousands in the placebo group vs thousands in the treatment group and run the numbers, they just want their family back.
