Another thing that can get in the way is getting a crappy whip to start learning with. If your area is prone to wet weather, I'd say go with a nylon whip or similar over cow or roo hide. My favorite whip maker is Peter Jack, personally, if you want something from leather. A great starter would be one of his Stockman's whips (4)
