Year after year, rescue groups recover abandoned infants— 95% girls. Some are found alive. Many are not. A few weeks of cases in one district can turn up several tiny bodies, some already torn by animals. Boys are treated as the family’s future—heirs, labour, old-age security. Girls are often seen as a cost: another mouth, a dowry to pay, “someone else’s property” after marriage. Births outside marriage carry crushing stigma. The infant—almost always a girl—is hidden or dumped so the family can pretend it never happened. For the hundreds of unnamed girls left in garbage, prosecution is rare. That is why the practice continues. This is murder. Dumping newborn baby girls does happen in the UK. What is more frequent is sex selective abortions.
