Trade unions will decide whether to strike or not on this plan which is intended to guarantee equal pay for work of equal value across the workforce, and the council says it will reduce its overall gender pay gap from 2.6% to -0.5%, based on independent modelling. It will cost £82.5 million, made up of £65.4m in 2027/28, £16.5m in 2028/29, and a smaller remaining amount the following year.

Paranoid schizophrenic Valdo Calocane had an outstanding arrest warrant for assaulting a police officer when he killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates in Nottingham in 2023. The phrase ‘known to the authorities’ continually reappears in the news coverage high-profile cases like these. By now, everyone is familiar with the scourge of two-tier policing, but it seems we have a two-tier bail system too. It is worth contrasting Levy’s treatment – being bailed repeatedly – with those whose ‘crime’ was to have promoted distasteful or controversial political views. Lucy Connolly was arrested and charged for an intemperate tweet she posted in July 2024. ‘Set fire to all the fucking hotels full of the bastards for all I care’, she posted at the height of the Southport riots. She deleted the post in a matter of hours. But it didn’t matter – the police and prosecutors were determined to get their woman, even if she was the primary carer for her 12-year-old daughter and had never committed a crime before. Connolly was effectively forced to plead guilty, denied bail twice, sentenced to 31 months and spent 10 months in HMP Peterborough.
Then there’s the case of Jamie Michael in Wales. Like Connolly, he had taken to social media to share his thoughts on immigration amid the Southport riots. In a video posted on Facebook, Michael said the UK was ‘under attack’ from immigrants. He was charged and immediately imprisoned, only to be granted bail after spending 17 days in jail. A jury later acquitted him in a matter of hours. So what do those who are responsible for letting Simon Levy loose on the streets of London have to say for themselves? Not much, it seems. The Met’s deputy assistant commissioner, Kevin Southworth, has described Levy’s case as ‘tragedy beyond words’ and a ‘collective system failure’ for the police. But this isn’t good enough. Two women are dead and another has been raped. These were entirely preventable crimes, not unfortunate tragedies. Each individual decision to let Levy go or to release him on bail has played its own grim role.

Friend's granddaughter, whom she looks after all the time, has started showing signs of getting far too close for comfort to puberty, she is only 9 come December 😩 It can run in some families and weight doesn't help, she, although active, is carrying too much, but the modern pollutants angle is worrying, because there is definitely an increase in early puberty in girls.

It is a struggle for anti-establishment kudos. It is the political equivalent of cringe-inducing dad dancing at the school disco (something for which Creasy has form). Gene editing has the power to alter the trajectory of human evolution for ever; the direction it takes will depend on who wields the editing tools. “There is no public funding available for researchers in the space,” Tie explains. “Everything is privately funded.” It’s up to entrepreneurs to demonstrate the potential benefits for humankind, she says, so regulators may soften their hardline stance and allow them to rewrite human DNA. For anything to change, there needs to be wider public acceptance of gene editing. With that in mind – and in the spirit of the openness she claims as her USP – Tie has invited me to join her in the run-up to her party as she takes on what she calls the “fear dressed up as caution” about her field. Her goal, she says, is to save humanity from the cruel tyranny of heritable diseases. But, as her birthday celebration demonstrates, Tie doesn’t do things by halves. If she succeeds, what next? Money is flowing into human genetic engineering. Since Tie arrived in New York last August, some of the richest men in the world have begun investing in her rivals. Gene editing startup Preventive launched in October with the stated aim of “preventing disease before birth”, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman and his husband, Oliver Mulherin, along with Brian Armstrong, the CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, are among its investors. Seven months before Preventive’s launch, Armstrong coined the term “the Gattaca stack” – after the dystopian 1997 sci-fi film about a near-future society dominated by genetically engineered super-beings – in a post on X describing technologies he says will be routinely used to create the babies of the future. Gene editing “for disease prevention, or enhancement” was included in Armstrong’s list. For him, at least, this is about improving babies, as well as avoiding disease.
It would be easy to take Tie at her word that she only wants to use gene editing to alleviate human suffering. But a little over a year ago she was using this technology to biohack pets – trying to create glow-in-the-dark rabbits, hypoallergenic cats and even dragons that would be sold on to consumers – with her first ever gene editing startup, the Los Angeles Project. “I’m personally really interested in the unicorn,” Tie said at the time.

Northamptonshire Police said the charges against the teenager, who cannot be named due to his age, included 12 counts of sexually assaulting a female. He was also charged with one count of raping a girl under 13, and one count of raping a girl aged between 13 and 15.

A teenage traveller gang who filmed themselves raping lone schoolgirls in two separate sex attacks have avoided jail.
Two 14-year-old boys targeted one of their victims, 15, on Snapchat before luring her to an underpass where they laughed and filmed themselves as they raped her. Two months later the pair, this time joined by a third boy aged just 13, gang-raped a second schoolgirl at knifepoint while again recording the attack on their phones as they goaded each other to degrade her further. The trio - all from the traveller community - were convicted of rape in March following a five-week trial, with the two older boys also found guilty of taking indecent images of a child, relating to the recordings they made of their attacks. But all three defendants were today handed youth rehabilitation orders instead of jail sentences during a hearing at Southampton Crown Court - as a judge told them 'none of you need to go to prison'.
The soft-touch sentence quickly provoked a furious backlash, with a senior Tory MP telling the Daily Mail it was 'a sickening case of soft justice'. The first 14-year-old assailant, who is now 15, was given a three-year youth rehabilitation order with requirements of 'intensive surveillance and supervision' for 180 days, after being convicted of two counts of rape and one count of taking indecent images of a child. The second 14-year-old attacker, also now 15, was likewise given a three-year youth rehabilitation order with the same requirements for six counts of rape, while the 13-year-old attacker, now 14, was handed an 18-month rehabilitation order after being convicted of two counts of rape. Youth rehabilitation orders are a community sentence for under-18s which can carry a range of different requirements such as unpaid work.
Judge Nicholas Rowland told the boys: 'None of you need to go to prison today.' He said the boys are 'very young', had low intelligence, a 'limited understanding of consent' and were susceptible to 'peer pressure'. The judge also praised the boys for their conduct during the trial, saying 'I think of you as very young and none of you have been in any big trouble before. 'You have all done very well with the restrictions put in place throughout the trial. (The second boy) and (the third boy) your problems are quite bad.' Shadow home secretary Chris Philp condemned the sentence, telling the Daily Mail: 'These despicable traveller youths should have been jailed. This is a sickening case of soft justice. 'Repeated gang rapes against schoolgirls deserve the harshest penalties - as a punishment and as a deterrent. 'This soft judge is sending a signal that these appalling crimes will go without proper punishment, encouraging other offenders. 'The Labour Government claimed it wants to halve violence against women and girls. But rape is up almost 10 per cent under Labour, and with soft sentences like this it’s no surprise. 'The Labour Government needs to urgently grip this situation and ensure proper sentences get handed down.' What soft sentences and gives no deterrent or justice to that poor girl. Why are sentences for rape so soft in this country you would have got better justice in a third world country than in Britain.

The problem is that the enormous levels of immigration did not only fail to deliver the economic rocket fuel of the pro open borders most blustering of claims, but also brought with it strains at every level of British life. There are the very visible problems of trying to integrate extremely culturally foreign people into British life when they have by their sheer numbers very little need, desire, or ability to integrate. A trickle of immigration from one part of India dispersed around the country and those new arrivals might feel some level of need to modify their way of life so as to fit in with those of their host country, but from 2021 to the end of 2024 around 850,000 Indian nationals arrived long-term. With Indian immigration adding up to roughly 1.5 to 2 million Indian nationals over the last decade there is very little reason to make concessions to the natives — with all of the resultant frictions that may entail.
I don’t single out India because Indian immigration brings with it notably high levels of crime on a per capita basis (Albania topped recent league tables based on the prison population, followed by Kosovans, Vietnamese, Algerians, Jamaicans, Eritreans, Iraqis and Somalis). Rather, it’s because the huge numbers are the result of immigration riders inserted into trade deals. India needs to create approximately 7.85 million new non-farm jobs per year until around 2030 to absorb the growing workforce and keep employment stable. Cumulatively, this implies a need for roughly 47–50 million new non-farm jobs by 2030. The easiest way to tip the scales is to offload as many of these workers as possible to other economies. This also adds a stream of remittances to the Indian economy. When post-Brexit leaders celebrated their newfound abilities to sign trade deals with India, the agreement to take in hundreds of thousands of low-skilled Indian workers was sold to the public as a cherry on top of the cake.
By having bound themselves so tightly to the idea that high immigration was not just a function of free markets but a desirable one, anybody now advocating for free market libertarianism in Britain is now associated with all of the worst aspects of high immigration and it has real consequences. Public policymaking is about trade offs. It is extremely clear that the trade offs of immigration are no longer tolerable to a majority of voters — something likely to be spelled out in this week’s council elections in England and Wales.

Several psychiatric offenders have been paid to advise the NHS on patient care, a Telegraph investigation has found. On a number of occasions psychiatric offenders held up as “patient experts” by trusts have either killed after being discharged from hospital or have advised on patient care despite having killed. Their appointment is part of NHS England’s “recovery approach”, whereby previously violent psychiatric offenders can be considered “experts by experience” and can be engaged to advise trusts on patient care as “equal partners” with doctors. NHS trusts enlist experts by experience to advise on improving mental health services, to recruit and train staff and to take part in research projects. However, doctors and campaigners have raised concerns that some offenders with a history of mental illness who have been employed as experts are being discharged too quickly, posing a potential risk to the public and denying justice to their victims. One former NHS psychiatrist warned that some patients taking part in such schemes “could be seen as [making] progress”, helping them to be fast-tracked out of detention facilities before it may be safe to do so.
The former head of an NHS mental health trust described the findings of The Telegraph’s investigation as “very worrying”. “Hearing the user experience is one thing. But getting someone who has killed someone to advise you on how to care for people who are seriously ill is another,” he said. In one example, the Royal College of Psychiatry enlisted Martin Saberi – a repeat offender who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008 and was released on licence in 2016 after serving 16 years of a life sentence for armed robbery – to deliver a workshop on substance misuse to doctors at its annual forum in July 2018. Patients who take part in the Royal College scheme can earn up to £140 a day and must be a “role model” for the organisation’s values and behaviours, according to a 2024 candidate information pack. In January 2019, Saberi, who still has a LinkedIn account linked to his name that describes him a “service user expert at Royal College of Psychiatrists”, murdered Amy Griffiths, a transgender woman Saberi met on a dating site.

This got bad enough that Hamburg’s Education Senator had to publicly address it and sign a formal joint statement against religious intimidation in schools.
Read that again. A European city’s education authority had to issue an official statement telling students that bullying girls over music class is not acceptable.

And the instinct of too many officials is still to soften the language, add context, and avoid naming the problem directly. Because naming it makes you the bad guy.

Then extremists, militias, and religious hardliners took over.
Women lost rights. Freedom disappeared. Speaking freely, dressing freely, and living freely became dangerous.

Nevertheless, he gives me the creeps. Polanski has cultivated a gentle, come-to-me-my-flock look — but when he is questioned persistently, a look of imperious confusion followed by a flash of real contempt and anger comes through. Being grilled by Laura Kuenssberg in early May, he came across as testy and slippery. When he talks with his hands, which he does often, one is irretrievably reminded of his breast-building days, and how perhaps he must have described similar circles in the air. It distracts me from what he’s saying – which is just as well, as he really does spout bunkum.

The rising cost of living and new technology are leading to record levels of exploitation in the UK, the independent anti-slavery commissioner (IASC) has warned. Over 23,000 potential victims of modern slavery were referred to the monitoring group in 2025, a 22% increase on the previous year and the highest number ever recorded. A report published on Monday has warned that people trafficking, forced labour and sexual exploitation will become harder to detect in the coming years unless urgent action is taken against criminal networks.
More than a fifth of potential victims in 2025 were from the UK, the largest single group. Eritrean nationals (13%) were the second-largest group, followed by Vietnamese nationals (9%). The report comes more than 10 years after the Modern Slavery Act came into force, and draws together evidence from more than 50 organisations to analyse how exploitation may evolve.

Isn’t it amazing that when Jones viewed Hamas’s self-filmed footage of its fascistic pogrom of 7 October 2023 – which included a clip of a murdered Jew with her underwear torn off – he said: ‘If there was rape and sexual violence committed, we don’t see this on the footage.’ Yet when known haters of Israel say dogs are raping Palestinians, he repeats it verbatim.
