Reflecting recently on queer & trans safe places online and what the heck that means. For me, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) was the first place I experienced where the scary questions could be asked. What spaces were vital to your exploration? What would Nos need to also provide a place for lil hidden pieces of ourselves?
Here is an essay long ago me wrote when AIM was officially shut down - “I didn’t know what I would grow up to be, other than afraid… In our suburban world, my friends and I struggled to find ourselves. Maybe sharing our histories out loud would have made them more real.”
