I got zapped by Blockstream (npub1jg5…6n8n). A part of me is geeking out. Another part of me gets it.
When you think of it, corporate zaps for plebs are an excellent marketing and customer engagement strategy. Loyalty, value, and brand or cause-positive speech can be instantly rewarded.
Bitcoiners are irrationally excited about zaps. I get it, it's awesome. It's also notable that the monetary cost is nil. We are getting excited instead about adoption and novelty. In my own example, blockstream has reinforced my positive attribution of the brand, and made me more likely to consume or purchase their products. Well done!
This is extrinsic positive reinforcement. Zaps modify human behaviour through immediate reward. This is a good thing and is a great example of rudimentary behavioural psychology at work.
