That’s a fun question! I spent a tiny time looking for references in _Punch_ magazine but don’t see an efficient way. Somebody?

Until WWI people in novels are writing things with post office pens, or grocery pens, or saying someone’s handwriting is so bad that it looks like a post office pen. Until fountain pens were cheap and shock resistant pens lived on desks — “desk set”, eg. That’s the 1920s or later?
