Today's nerdsnipe: Could you transmit messages using a laser from Mexico to Canada, by bouncing off of mirrors on mountains along the way?
[I did the math](https://www.reddit.com/r/geography/comments/1n1w2m8/in_theory_someone_standing_in_mexico_could_see/nb277w0/ ). The answer is yes, it's totally doable even using affordable equipment... in a vacuum. In air, not even a lonely photon would survive. Exponential decay due to air absorption is a bitch... <sup>;;</sup>
