Those in the tropical freshwater fish hobby will of course know, that since the early 2000's cryptosporidium outbreaks have got more frequent as profiteering water companies became more prevalent and neglectful in their duties. The captive fish tend to get killed off en masse before the humans get noticeably sick.
It's one of the reasons UV sterilisers got more popular. Because water companies would likely kill the fuck out of your fish every few years without one.
