You are voting with the next election in mind.
1) normalizing 3rd party votes with peers
2) signaling to one of two major parties that they are off track (as they determine a loss was due to you) and
3) if a certain percentage of 3rd party votes is reached, I believe more public money for candidates gets unlocked in the next election.
It’s forgoing bad solutions in the immediate election for hopefully better solutions in a later election
