Those were difficult years for older Catholics, made worse because too few bishops/pastors gave time & resources to explanations & adult education. In parishes where change was done thoughtfully & where explanations were provided, things went smoother. Change is always tough, and in this case, it was centuries worth of ritual & non-essential beliefs that underwent revision. Most younger people (under 35-40 maybe) adapted easily, but there were always battles, especially with “cultural Catholics” whose practices were entrenched with their daily lives. Some never adapted, hence EWTN & the more conservative groups.
