Trade plays a big role in long-term human rights outcomes. It is engagement with China since the 80s that has tranferred a lot of the world's weath to them, which allows them to continue to violate human rights without any way for us to hold them accountable. Contrast that to if we had not given them free trade all these years. They would not be as powerful today as they were back then, and we'd be able to use tariffs to object to their policies. On top of that, EU and the US would both be producing a lot more and importing less from China.
