Not saying we should eliminate lists, but as a thought experiment... one could encrypt content of a status note with 1-of-2 multisig Schnorr so only nostr keys in 'relationship' can read relationship content and determine if it is a follow / block / mute / wink / middle finger / etc. 'Private Status'. Such a model would allow users to privately designate a fresh public key for communication with other user should they want to privately message.
