I think it will only become mainstream though once the mainstream is hurting enough from censorship elsewhere.
We tend to be creatures of comfort, and generally require pain or discomfort to make change, unfortunately .
Since you are recently back, have you checked out nostrapps.com by Karnage (npub1r0r…q9ac) ?
It shows the incredible growth of the ecosystem, and all the apps being built on #nostr!
