The batteries in hardwired provide backup during power outage. From personal experience I can tell you that those damn batteries provided uninterrupted alarms for over a month in our house post fire. There were ones where it was not safe for me to get on a ladder to pull the battery. To this day I dread performing the test after inserting fresh batteries since that sound is a trigger.
